Possessing The Land {Review}

Disclosure: I received this complementary product through the Homeschool Review Crew

If you are looking for a homeschool Bible curriculum for your middle school student, check out 5th Grade – Possessing the Land from Positive Action Bible Curriculum.

We were blessed with the Teacher Manual and one Student Manual, and since my boys so enjoyed previous curriculum from this company I went ahead and purchased a second student book so that they could both do this review.

I very much like this company! Upon research of the company’s doctrinal statement, I discovered that it lines right up with our beliefs. I also appreciate that when the student is directed to look up scripture, they are given the reference as opposed to having it directly written out. I am happy about this for two reasons. One, because we use only the King James Version of The Bible, and it makes is difficult when the student is asked to copy a written out verse from a different version. We don’t often find curricula which uses only the KJV. Two, having just the reference forces the student to actually look up the scripture, which I would much rather that they do.

With 35 lessons, Possessing the Land is intended to be a one school year curriculum covering God’s love and care for His people throughout the Old Testamant. Your student(s) will cover the following lessons:

  • The Word of God
  • Sin and Redemtion
  • Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac
  • Jacob and Esau
  • The Trials of Joseph
  • The Mercy of Joseph
  • Israel in Bondage
  • The Exodus from Egypt
  • The Law of God
  • Our Holy God
  • God Guides His People
  • Moses’ Final Charge
  • Entering the Land
  • Conflict in Canaan
  • Judging Israel
  • The Story of Ruth
  • The Last Judge of Israel
  • The First King of Israel
  • The Loyalty of David
  • The Reign of David
  • The Reign of Solomon
  • Elijah and Elisha
  • Ezra the Teacher
  • Neemiah the Organizer
  • Queen Ester
  • The Suffering of Job
  • Songs of Praise
  • Wisdom and Vanity
  • Three Prophets
  • Daniel’s Discipline
  • Daniel’s Devotion
  • The Prophet Who Ran
  • The Minor Prophets

There are also review chapters, Hymn lyrics, and scripture memory sections, along with reproduceable quizzes for each lesson.

Here are some pictures of some of the lessons my boys were working through:

My Teacher Manual came in a very sturdy 3-ring binder, and is very easy to use. At the beginning, there are pages of teaching material, then there are teacher coyies of every student page with the answers on them as you can see below. After the teacher pages there is a section of reproduceable quizzes, one of hymn lyrics, and scripture memory.

The Batman and The Artist have been really enjoying working through  5th Grade – Possessing the Land. In fact, The Batman who is my older, special needs guy, said one day while working through a lesson “This is really FUN, Mom!” That is just one of the reasons why I’ve felt blessed to receive another curriculum from Positive Action. You can read my review of the previous curriculum here.

Please note that my family is not the only Review Crew Family who has been reviewing Bible curricula from Positive Action Bible Curriculum! Some of us have been reviewing 5th Grade – Possessing the Land, and some have been reviewing Wise Up (Wisdom In Proverbs) Please check out ALL of the reviews here!

Sinus Infections Suck!

So, I’ve been miserable for a couple of weeks now, with sinus pressure, difficulty when nose blowing, etc . . . I thought it was just the variable weather we’ve been getting. However, my husband finally convinced me to go see the doctor and I got an appointment yesterday. It’s a sinus infection, so now I’m on an antibiotic and a nose spray. I dislike taking antibiotics, but they do work. So, I will suck it up and take the meds for five days, after which hopefully I’ll be well again.

Pursued To Eternity by John Riley {Review}

In Pursued to Eternity, John Riley took this reader on an exciting adventure while sharing scientific evidence for creation. I was given the blessing of reading this book from Covenant Books in order to review it for my readers!

This is a very nice trade sized soft cover book. At approximately 150 pages it is a fairly quick read, but packed with enough story and information to keep my interest. Did I say story? Yes, I did! As noted in the introduction we find the following:

“This is a short novel with fictional events, such as hunting for dinosaurs, living during the Exodus, managing school conflicts, searching for oil. Also blended into the book are nonfictional challenges to evolution and an extensive survey of apologetics.”

Here is a short video for you to check out:

While it is a novel about the six month journey of two brothers, Connor Bridges a Christian who is a Biology teacher and Doctor Alan Bridges who is a geologist who is an Atheist, it is filled with scientific proofs supporting Creation as opposed to Evolution.

My very favorite chapter is called “Please Don’t Indoctrinate Us!, in which some students went for pizza with their teacher Connor Bridges’ family to celebrate a game victory. They asked him some questions about a test from earlier in the week:

“Given a box of jigsaw-puzzle pieces of the fifty states, you are asked to select each piece from the box in alphabetical order . . . blindfolded. How many incorrect selections are probable before one correct selection, with all the pieces in proper order, is made?”

Once their teacher did the math for them, they discovered the answer would be equal to 3 followed by sixty-four zeroes.

After a student asked the obvious question which was “What does this have to do with Biology?” his teacher responded that it has to do with the theory of Evolution, in which all natural progression comes from undirected mutations, most of which are not beneficial. The idea is that a few of the mutations result in new, well-ordered designs, then natural selection would preserve for the future. He asked the students to come up with mutations as an attempt to put parts into a correct order, similar to the puzzle pieces activity. There would be far more unuseful mutations than an extremely limited number of useful ones.

The students had already been reading things at home which seriously questioned Evolution, and wondered if there was a way of presenting the information from their own sources in class as a balance to the theory of Evolution in the text books. The students developed a web-site on their own with all research done after school and at home, with voluntary participation, no grades or school credit. Students from other schools discovered the site, asked their teachers about discussing the material, and reminded that only the biology textbook could be taught in the classroom.Other schools found out, and it just spread! While this whole thing ultimately cost Connor Bridges his job, before that happened he touched so many lives, and he very likely considered it a worthwhile sacrifice.

John Riley is also has designed the course Apologetics: Creative vs. Evolution, for for SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It is a a 14-week, video-based course for grades 7 to 12. Like his book, the course demonstrates evidence and proof for Creationism and allows the students to examine the evidence and come to their own conclusions.

I would recommend that you check out the reviews of 24 other Review Crew Members! Please go here to read them!
