Unit Studies From Homeschool Complete: Review

We have been working with a lovely unit study about Pioneers, which was given to us by Homeschool Complete for the purpose of this review.

Unit studies from Homeschool Complete truly ARE “complete!” This is really chock full of cross curricular skills, all rolled up into one topic, Pioneers in this case.

The literature we used for the Pioneers Unit Study was On The Banks of Plum Creek, and Farmer Boy, both written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I have always liked her books. I watched every single episode of Little House On The Prairie, when it was first run ( way back “in the olden days,” as my children say ). They watch them now, though, and “The Puzzler” really likes them, along with the books, so I thought this would be a pretty good fit for him.

This and other Unit Studies from Homeschool Complete cover the following subjects

  • Bible
  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Fine Arts
  • Physical Development
  • Fitness
  • Character Development

There is a very informative introduction for you, the parent/teacher, followed by pages listing the skills the child will cover, a materials list, a United States map, world map, a board game to make and play, and a number of manipulatives you can print out, cut up, and use if you don’t have the actual physical manipulative. There are twelve lessons in this 154 page pdf, followed by 39 pages of student workbook pages. The workbook pages are well designed, covering every skill listed for the unit study. They are colorful, so if your child has an issue with distraction caused by bright and busy workbook pages I would recommend printing them out with just black ink.

For Bible, the scripture used is taken from the New International Version, however I had no trouble switching and using the King James Version, which is the only version used by our family.

“The Puzzler” is really enjoying the books, and the worksheets from the Unit Study. Because of his developmental delays, we are going very slow, but keeping it interesting. Here is “The Puzzler,” doing some of his reading, and getting started with some science and language arts worksheets about crickets and other things related to the pioneers.

I had previously purchased a boxed set of the Little House books, so I wasn’t sure if these would match up with the unit study, but in fact, they do! When told to use a certain page in the book to read the word which “The Puzzler” was supposed to describe its meaning within context, there it was, right on the page given.

This is an awesome unit study! We are eager to finish (but at the pace he can handle), so that we can move on and do the other two Unit Studies we received,  Colonies and Pilgrims.

Before this, I had never even heard of Homeschool Complete, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to get our hands on their products.
