Captain Absolutely . . . Our Review

My boys have discovered graphic novels, but most of them that we have found have in my husband’s and my opinion to be really way too mature for our boys. Because of this, I was thrilled to introduce them to Captain Absolutely from Focus On The Family!
Captain Absolutely is over one hundred pages of exciting comic book style story which had the boys captivated. As a matter of fact, I was barely able to even get the mailing package open when “The Artist” had it GONE from my hands, lol! He had it finished in less than two hours!
IMG_20170519_113548
The other boys are also enjoying this story, although they have yet to get it completed as they all read slower than does “The Artist.”
Captain Absolutely comes to us from Focus On The Family,
and it is a spin off of the  Adventures in Odyssey series, a program that I can remember playing on the car radio for my kids when they were young and we had to run errands during the time it was being broadcast. We really enjoyed the program, so I was sure they would love this book! I was right, too!
Captain Absolutely tells us the story of librarian Josiah King. When there is an explosion, he takes shelter in a room full of Bibles, and while waiting to be rescued from the rubble, he begins reading the Bible, which he’s never seen before. In fact, the sign says they are BANNED! You see, Metropolitanville, where the library is, happens to be a city where anything goes, nobody has any sense of right or wrong.
During this time while stuck in the room reading, the city’s radioactive core was leaking, and slowly filling the room. By morning, a great change had happened to him, and as seems to always be the comic book way that superheros are made, the radioactive leak has made him into CAPTAIN ABSOLUTELY! And, like all superheros, Captain Absolutely has a nemesis. His name is Dr. Relative, who goes by the world view that right and wrong is changeable based on what is best for him at any given moment.
“The Artist” just told me that his favorite character is Lord Foulspleen. He says this is because he is  former time traveler who destroyed priceless works of art, until Captain Absolutely arrested him. When he was in prison, he turned his life over to The Lord, showing that everyone can get a second chance. Now he works at the Art Museum and supports Captain Absolutely. He also says it was fun to do the questions in the back of the book. You can check your answers because it gives the page number that goes with the questions.
“The Artist” also likes that the book says “God’s Word is true, but it’s not always simple. Discuss these questions with a parent or youth pastor as you dig deeper into Captain Absolutely.”

Homeschool Rescue . . . My Review

I am SO excited to have been chosen as one of 100 reviewers to try out the Homeschool Rescue course, from Only Passionate Curiosity which was created for Homeschool moms like you and me!

Homeschool Rescue is an online video course which was created by Heather Aliano, a home-school mom like us. No matter where you are in your homeschooling journey, I believe that this course can be of help to you. No matter what style of homeschooling your family uses, I think this can help you. After all, there is no one right way to home-school, which is the beauty of being able to do this form of education!

Homeschool Rescue gives you a 60 day e-Course chock full of good, practical lessons to help you get your home education on track for YOUR family. Your home education will (and should!) look like it is uniquely set up for your family, as opposed to a carbon copy of all other homeschoolers. After all, that IS one of the reasons we took our kids out of institutional schooling, yes?

Along with the video lessons, you will receive audio lessons in case you like to listen on the go, and printable transcriptions in case you’d rather read your lessons.

There are printable workbook assignments for each video (don’t get too upset, it’s not difficult homework at all).

There will be ongoing support from other homeschool parents, resources for successful homeschooling, and bonus content which is added to regularly.

Now understand, this is for lifetime access! So anytime you feel a need for a refresh, you can go right back to it! Also, in addition to the online lessons, your membership allows you into a private Facebook group, where you are able to discuss with other homeschool moms who are doing this very same e-Class!

There are also a goodly number of planners you may choose from, or even mix and match to create the perfect planner for you.

One of the sections which absolutely appeals to me is where the course speaks to why we should stop comparing our kids to other kids, and also, why we should stop comparing ourselves to other homeschool parents.

This course is helpful in that I am learning more about the importance of self-care (to me, it’s like putting the oxygen on yourself before putting it on your kid when it drops down in the airplane). You can’t take care of others if you never take care of yourself. I also have to work harder on being able to say “no” without feeling such guilt for doing so. Both of these are so hard for me!

There is an area on homeschooling with special needs children as well, which is important to me in particular.

Heather appears to have really put her years of homeschooling to good use in creating this class! I can learn better time management and organization, how to find out your child’s/children’s’ learning styles and making that work better for them, and yourself.

Would you like to know more about what we reviewers are learning? Check out this graphic below!

The Secret Bridge . . . Crew Review

The Secret Bridge from Lamplighter Publishing was written by author Amy Le Feuvre.  According to the web page, this book was written in the year 1899.  Lamplighter Publishing has a stated mission  “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord, by building Christ-like character one story at a time.”

The Secret Bridge is a BEAUTIFUL book, both to look at and to hold, with it’s leather-tone embossed cover. It is a hard cover, collectible book, one which will be a permanent addition to my own library!

As the reader, I joined the main character Bridget Channing as she travels by ship to England. Her father has died, and she is on her way to England, to her uncle. On this journey she becomes acquainted with a fellow passenger named Godfrey Bullingham. They spend time in conversation with each other while on the crossing, and once having arrived in England, Godfrey ends up being there to help her when she discovers that her uncle, who had invited her to come and live with him, has recently died. Bridget is left penniless, as a woman had convinced her uncle to marry HER, and leave his money to her, as well, by promising to care for Bridget as her own.

Godfrey convinces Bridget to marry him, not telling her until AFTER the wedding that he needs her to keep secret from his family that they are wed. She is left on her own to do this, as he is to be gone for a year in the Military, and we the readers are left to read on and discover the why of his request.

This is a wonderful story, both of the deepening relationships among the characters, and also of Bridget’s learning to love the Lord. In the beginning of the story, while on the ship, she states right out that she is not a believer, and does not love God. However, later on in England, she meets a Mr. Jocelyn, who subtly encourages her to “Acquaint thyself with him.” As she begins to try to do so, she also tries to help her husband to do the same.

There are secrets aplenty in The Secret Bridge, and it is well worth the read to get to them! I very much enjoy a book that was written as long ago as this one was. One of my long time favorite book series was written at the turn of the last century, and I re-read them at least once a year. I can certainly see this story joining them as a yearly favorite! I like a book that is clean, without objectionable content, and this story very much qualifies.

ArtAchieve . . . My Review

My boys and I have been enjoying learning new drawing techniques with lessons from ArtAchieve’s  Entire Level I.

I chose the Entire Level 1 because I wanted to participate, and am in no way whatsoever an artist. I am actually enjoying this, though, and we are taking it very slow, as a supplement to other school work. There are five different levels, so you can go to the ArtAchieve website and choose what would be best for you and your children.

I must confess that in all of the time I have been a member of the Homeschool Review Crew, I have ALWAYS shied away from any of the art lesson products. What made me change my mind and ask for this one, you ask? Well, I will tell you!

ArtAchieve is not just lessons in how to draw. The thing that really drew me to this product are the extras. For each and every lesson,, there are suggestions for Cross Curricular Connections, such as these for The Czech Cat, which thus far has been our favorite project. Part of ArtAchieve‘s aim is to create lessons even a child (or someone like me, lol!) could draw and be pleased with. For this project, the inspiration came from a bracelet charm that was found in a  Czech Republic jewelry shop.

Cute, isn’t it? And all we needed for this lesson were:

  • 1 sheet of 8 ½” x 11” color laser printing paper
  • 1 fine tipped black magic marker
  • 1 set of colored markers
  • 1 Czech Cat warm-up

We decided we would rather use colored pencils, however, even though the effect is different.

Here we are working on our warm up pages:

IMG_20170428_150638

Each lesson gives us a warm up page to learn the various strokes in the picture we will be learning how to draw. The warm up sheet shown here is for the Czech Cat.

What you see in the picture blow is a sample picture to help us remember how to put the pieces together (the sample would also be a good coloring page!) The drawing in the foreground is mine, before I began coloring and giving hr some personality.

IMG_20170428_153512

Here are our completed drawings!

IMG_20170505_130144IMG_20170505_130203IMG_20170505_130239IMG_20170505_130333IMG_20170505_130438 (1)

I really am not, and never have been all that interested in adding “busy work” into my homeschooling day, something that was always part of the box curriculum that we used when my older two boys were little. To be honest? I pretty much left those books separate and then sold them as new. But this? We LOVE ArtAchieve ! And we are enjoying Complete Level 1 so much that I can actually see myself considering moving on with additional levels after this.

Daily Bible Jigsaw . . . My Review

I have been working to complete puzzles with the  Daily Bible Jigsaw from Planet 316. This is a free, downloadable app that have the following options for use:

I downloaded my Daily Bible Jigsaw

from Google Play, and have been playing with it on my Android phone.  I was given five hundred play coins in my account for the purpose of this review.

I will be totally honest with you right now. I am NOT a fan of jigsaw puzzles, I am not very good at them at all! However, these come in little, bite sized chunks, and even *I* have been able to handle them! 🙂

One Daily Bible Jigsaw  puzzle is free to play every day, and you can play more puzzles by using some of your coins. You can earn coins by solving puzzles, by connecting the power piece within a certain time, or by watching commercials within the app for other games. I also do Google surveys to earn Google money! You can also purchase extra coins at prices which begin at $1.99 for 20 coins. Along with the daily free puzzle, you can play bonus 56 piece puzzles for free.

There are tools within the game to help you with the puzzles. They cost coins to use, although on some days one or more tool is free. My favorites have been the Edges (removes everything but the edge pieces), the Rotate tool (this turns all of the pieces to the correct position), and Sweep (moves single pieces out-of-the-way.) The Guide tool gives me a peek at the completed puzzle, and the magnet tool randomly connects two pieces for you.

The pictures that show up when a puzzle is completed are very nice, and there is a Bible verse associated with them, although I don’t think it is from the King James Version, something my regular readers already know that I would prefer. However, I CAN always go from my completed puzzle to my own Bible and look up the verse for myself!

I decided one day when the game asked me if I wanted, to open the game in Facebook. It’s been kind of fun to see the scores of some of my friends along side my own results!

After you complete each daily puzzle, a new piece is shown on the calendar page. Once you complete each day of the month, the entire thing will be uncovered!

I am still not much of a jigsaw puzzle fan, however, this has been helpful when I have just a few minutes to kill. It was also a good thing to have recently, as I was admitted into the hospital overnight. Just later that same week, I had to take “Mr. Loquacious” to the emergency room after he had a skateboarding accident and hurt his wrist.  Having the Daily Jigsaw Puzzle from Planet 316 gave me something to do during the time we had to wait around!

Color My Conversation: My Review

We have been blessed to receive for the purpose of this review a new to me program. It is called Color My Conversation, and it comes from the company Northern Speech Services.

I have four children who each have their own unique special needs, but all four of the boys struggle with conversation in one way or another. My eldest “The Batman” who is developmentally delayed due to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, came to us at the age of two. He has a lot of trouble with “getting” social cues when it comes to conversing, and tends to as a result, trap people into a conversation that they are too kind to walk away from. The same thing is true with “The Artist,” who came to us full-time at the age of six. Our twins, “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler”, who we came to us when they were age eight, both have severe trauma, and have trouble with carrying on a proper conversation as well.

You can see in the picture above that this box came with a WEALTH of product, absolutely everything that is needed to use this program! We were just thrilled to see everything included, and I did not have to purchase a single thing! We already own a bicycle pump to inflate the ball (four boys, after all!) Once the ball was inflated of course, it couldn’t be kept in the box anymore, so I have had it up on a shelf. When we took it down to use though, “The Batman’s” therapy dog, Shiloh, thought it was for him, and followed along to where we were going, lol!

Color My Conversation is meant to help when teaching people (not just children, as evidenced in my home) the language skills needed for face-to-face conversations. Using a multi-sensory teaching approach to help guide children (or special needs adults) through the conversation flow, by helping them learn to make their way through a conversation starting at a basic greeting and working toward the most complex conversation that the person is capable of having. This could be vastly different from child to child, to special needs adults.

Using a multi-sensory, holistic approach becomes a fun, engaging way to aid in the  development of social awareness, self-regulation, executive function, and other skills. The complete (again, EVERYTHING is included in the box when you receive it) program includes a lot of fun, interactive activities that help the participants learn how to  start,  maintain and end a conversation properly.

This program is set up to work with the student/students who are working through it by using learning without error in order to keep stress low and outcomes positive. This is important to me, as my boys will stress out to the max if they feel they are making a mistake, most especially “The Batman” and “The Puzzler.”

Because this program comes complete with a comprehensive manual on CD and online lesson support videos, I was able understand how to implement this program to really help my kids be successful thus far.

Color My World can be easily adapted to any room or group size or use with an individual student and over the period of time that works best.

Some of the things Color My World uses in their multi-sensory approach are listed below:

  • visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic strategies to teach social language and conversational concepts
  • movement, song, rhyme, color coding, signing/gestures, bead-work, artwork, pictures/photographs, line drawings, worksheets, role plays, interactive game activities, and field assignments

Some groups that this program would be great for include:

  • high-functioning autism
  • Asperger Syndrome
  • language delayed
  • ADHD
  • children with mild intellectual disabilities
  • children within the general population

The Beginner Level, ages 5 to 12 years, uses a kinesthetic, or hands on approach by using:

  • “Conversation Path” floor pads. Students will physically step on as they walk through the conversation, and the pads can be written on with the included dry erasable markers
  • The inflated ball will be tossed (we also handed it to each other) back and forth to represent turn taking as well as to aid in the  establishment of eye contact. Ribbon will also be used.
  • Students will learn simple greetings & farewells (including body language/nonverbal communication), short and long conversations which include topics, comments, questions and topic changers.
  • A Wall Display will start to be built to aid in representing the Conversation Path, and should remain up as a visual support for the children.

Throughout the program, adaptions are given for use with those who have intellectual disabilities.

In the Intermediate Level, ages 5 through 12, students will continue using the skills learned in the Beginner Level while adding and practicing the new conversational features being introduced:

  • Learning about earn about “WH” questions, Interrogative Reversal questions (i.e. Yes! No! Maybe So!), making comments count, how to become a topic changer pro, and how to speak loud and clear.
  • Worksheets, crafts, artwork, drill work and game activities are included for each lesson.
  • Students will grow in confidence as they practice their use of the conversational features being presented and have an increased ability to have conversations on even more topics.

In the Advanced Level, ages 8 through 12, your student/s will be introduced to the multi-activity Color My Conversation Game  when they will either actively play or observe and comment on those who are playing it. The purpose of this activity is to focus on improving a child’s ability to begin, continue, or close topics using appropriate topic transitions and turn taking strategies using the 2-sided multi-activity Color My conversation Game Board. The students will also practice taking the role of the main listener or  main speaker.

Finally, we have the Expert Level, which is for variable ages, including adult. It is intended for ALL ages, because it is intended to identify the conversational skills that each person is capable of using, and then support the transfer of those skills from the practice room to a real world setting.

By practicing conversations in the “real world, you, the instructor, can also steer students into conversations that have not been addressed or have a need for more skill development.

There is even a special lesson for those with special needs! Targeting the same goals as the Beginner Level, adaptations are provided to meet the needs of children who have intellectual disabilities. Some of what can be done is listed below:

  • Conversation Path stones can be used with no writing, and may  show drawings or symbols instead.
  • Verbal instructions may be limited,  using more exaggerated gestures instead.
  • A more limited amount of topics,  but using a higher level of repetition for each topic.
  • Sentence strips can be used to support grammar and sentence structure.
  • Goals for conversation features will be adjusted and repetitive in nature.
  • The Beading Activity will be used to provide a visual support for continuation of the conversations being taught.
  • Enhanced use of the highly motivating and appreciated Color My conversation Songs.

There are sample pages available if you scroll down on this page.

This is a complete, in the box program. As I said I didn’t need to purchase a single thing to get started. at the price of $149.00, I think it’s well worth it when it comes to helping those who need it in learning how to better communicate. I think it is helping my kids, and will continue to do so!

CompuScholar, Inc. My Review

Solid computer skills are so important in this modern age of technology and so I really wanted to review the new Digital Savvy course from CompuScholar, Inc. for myself. This course is providing me as the student, excellent instruction in fundamental computing topics.

I chose to review Digital Savvy using myself as the student because even though I have been using  a computer for some time, there are a lot of things I just have not learned how to do. The technological side I tend to leave to my techy husband, but I really feel that I have needed for some time to learn how to use the different programs available to me. Why, I have never even learned how to make and use a spreadsheet, for example!

With Digital
Savvy, the lessons begin more with the actual hardware systems, which as I said, I pretty much leave to my husband, so the first section of lessons are not what I was looking for at all. They may very well be what YOU or your student need, however!

Topics which are covered include:

  • Hardware, software, and operating systems
  • Managing files and folders
  • Basic networking
  • Online safety and computer security
  • Using Word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation programs
  • Creating simple databases
  • Image editing
  • Using social media and email communications
  • Introductory website design
  • Simple computer programming concepts
  • Exploration of computing careers

There is a link on the main Digital Savvy  web page which you may click on to see the complete syllabus for this course.

This course is the sort that I really enjoy, it is pretty much open and go, as opposed to a teacher needing to do pre-prep. While there are teacher areas, since I am the student on this one, I’m doing it on my own.

It’s fairly easy to navigate Digital Savvy, too. When I log in, I can select the chapter I want to work in, the options for that lesson will be shown for me to choose. There is a lesson video in a pop up screen for me to watch, and then I can do the associated quiz for that lesson. There is also lesson text which can be used along with the video, or even to refer to later if needed to help understand something from the video.

At the end of each chapter, the student has an activity and an exam. So far, I’m weak in this area, but hoping to improve with time.

As I told you above, the technical lessons bog me down, a lot, so I am anxious to get to the part for which I REALLY wanted this terrific online course, the lessons on various software and such. I most especially want to learn about image editing, so that I can create my own images for this blog in the future! 🙂

Shepherd, Potter, Spy and the Star Namer . . . My Review

As an avid reader, I was very happy to receive for purpose of this review the book Shepherd, Potter, Spy–and the Star Namer from Peggy Consolver – Author.

I love reading great stories, especially those which bring history to life for me and for my kids. This book fits the bill. The story takes place during the last two years of the Israelites wandering in the desert before entering Canaan.

This IS a fictional book, because obviously one cannot go back in time and speak to, or live with the people from the time period being written about. It is however, based strongly on the aforementioned Biblical period, focusing on the lives of the Gibeonites and the Hebrews. Much of what is described in the story is documented in the Bible books of Joshua and Exodus.

As an author, Peggy Consolver was writing historical fiction about the ” Gibeonites of Joshua 9 and 10 from the point of view of a young shepherd boy and his family of potters. Struggling with describing the historical and geographical setting one day, I quipped to my husband, “If I really write this story, maybe I should go there.”  So, she did!

Being able to work in the pottery tent at the dig, brought these ancient people to life for this author, and to write about the lives of these people with much less struggle! It is her wish to bring her reader closer to God, by writing about HIStory. That is what history ultimately is you know, it is HIS story.

This story focuses at the beginning on a young shepherd boy named Keshub, a thirteen year old Canaanite boy who is a descendant of Ham. As do boys from every era though, Keshub wishes for adventure, which he gets, but really, at too young of an age. Keshub’s family was made up of shepherds and potters, and the potter’s son’s spy on the Hebrews from the cliffs above Jericho, watch them cross the Jordan, and witness the fall of Jericho! Of course, we’ve read about these events in our Bibles, but this story really makes them come alive, and makes me feel as though I am actually there!

One of the hardest things to read about was the worship of Molech, which was also dealt with in a play my kids did during Vacation Bible School several years ago at our church back where we used to live in Michigan, which was about the life of Ruth, a Moabite woman, so they did understand what was happening, and how horrible it was. 😦

You can read more about Peggy Consolver – Author by going to her website. You will read about the author herself, and her own history leading up to where she is now in her life. You will also see several short endorsements on this page, and be able to sign up for her newsletter!

If you want to “dig deeper” and learn even more using your novel, the author has also written an excellent study guide, available for purchase here. You may even download a sample of the study guide to check it out before buying it, if you wish!

I have found Shepherd, Potter, Spy–and the Star Namer by Peggy Consolver – Author to be a fascinating read, one which makes me think even more about the stories we read in the Bible. This book makes these particular events come to life in a wonderful way!
