Writing With Sharon Watson, Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis – My Review

We have had the opportunity in the past to use curricula from Writing With Sharon Watson, and because “The Artist” really enjoyed it we were very happy to get the chance to review her Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis!

For the purpose of this review, we received the following:

  • Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis Student Text/Workbook
  • Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis Teacher’s Guide
  • Bound copy of Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis Quiz and Answer Manual

IMG_20171115_110234

We also received access to the Quizzes to be done online, which then would grade them for us, allow the student to print out the completed quiz  and scoring, and would also then email the same to the email address used to log in and take the quizzes. In this case, I had “The Artist” use my email, so I would receive copies after he had done them.

We were also able to download as a pdf the free Novel Notebook, an 86 page optional addition. I did not tell “The Artist” that it was optional, because I really wanted him to use it. As it happens, I just asked “The Artist” what he thought of the Novel Notebook, and he says “It’s pretty good!” FYI, sometimes old age and trickery works! 🙂

Here is what I like best, as a parent/homeschooling teacher about products from Writing With Sharon Watson: I have found them all to be very good “open and go” products. I didn’t need to do any prep, other than providing the books called for. Basically, I handed it to “The Artist” and let him “have at it.”

Required readings are:

  • A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell, in the textbook
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Dover Publications
  • Silas Marner by George Eliot, Dover Publications
  • Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Dover Publications
    • An Assortment of Short Stories:
    • “A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett, in the textbook
    • “The Garden of Forking Paths” by Jorge Luis Borges, link provided
    • “Haircut” by Ring Lardner, link provided
    • “The Lady, or the Tiger?” by Frank Stockton, in the textbook
    • “Of the Passing of the First-Born” by W. E. B. Du Bois, in the textbook
    • “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” by Dylan Thomas, link provided
  • Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Dover Publications
  • Biography or autobiography of student’s choice
  • The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, Mariner Books

Within the text, Sharon Watson recommends specific editions, because when the Student Text asks questions, the student is often directed to a specific page or pages of the novel.

There are suggested activities for each reading. Below, you will see a pencil drawing that “The Artist” did after reading the short story “A Jury of Her Peers.”

IMG_20171113_174025

I was pleased with the amount of details he put into this drawing! Although, funny thing, when I pointed out that the kitchen sink setup seemed awfully modern, he said, and I quote “That’s the only kind of sink I know about!” 🙂

“The Artist” is now solidly into “Frankenstein”, which is the novel required for the second reading. He’s enjoying it very much, and looking forward to some of the other novels as well, especially “The Hobbit!”

This course is written for grades 9 – 12, and will qualify your student for one credit over two semesters. As with the other curricula we have used which was written by Sharon Watson, this is definitely written from a Christian worldview.

By the time he finishes this curriculum, “The Artist” will have been taught almost 100 literary terms and devices when they occur naturally in the reading selections. My hope is that as intended by Sharon Watson, my own student will gain a real appreciation for fine literature, and retain the knowledge of the many tools used by authors when they write.

This is the second volume in a series. However, students may take this and the first volume Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide in any order. This is another thing I quite like about Sharon Watson’s curricula.

All in all, we are so pleased to have the opportunity once again, of working with one of Sharon Watson’s products, and highly recommend this, and any other of her works.

A Day With The Horses!

The Puzzler spent some time with a friend from our church this past weekend, who happens to own some horses. He was SO looking forward to it, too! Of course, he didn’t realize until our friend picked him up, that he was going to get the FULL experience, LOL!

First, cleaning up after the horses!

And now, the reward, riding Will . . .

And riding Cowboy!

Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1 From Kid Niche Christian Books, Our Review

My family was very blessed to be given the study book Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1. This is a very nice book, printed colorfully on quality paper (70#) and already hole punched so that we could put into a notebook right away. It even came with a colorful cover sheet, which we placed into the clear pocket on the front of the notebook.

Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1 was sent to us for the purpose of this review, by the company Kid Niche Christian Books, which is devoted to helping you teach your children and grandchildren to pray the way that Jesus taught his disciples to pray, with their minds and their hearts.

Weave Your Word in Me — Part 1 has 36 Bible lessons for tweens, woven within The Lord’s Prayer. There are 72 pages illustrated in color to keep your child’s interest. This book also includes an answer key for six different Bible versions, including the King James Version, which is the only Bible my family is willing to use.

This study is great for grades 4 through 6, in Christian school, home school, or church. It can also be used for family study.

There are units on God The Father and on God The Son, along with prayer practice using a kid friendly re-wording of The Lord’s Prayer.

Various methods of learning include: Cartoons, Charts, Definitions, Drama, Drawing, Fill in the Blanks, Illustrations, Matching, Multiple Choice, Sequence, T&F, so your child will not be bored while learning.

You can see below the amount of learning a child can get in the 36 weeks this is designed for:

How did we use Weave Your Word In Me — Part 1? Well, as you may have read in a previous post, I recently spent several weeks in the hospital, followed unexpectedly by a stay in a Rehab Facility. I had originally intended to use this curriculum with all four of my boys, having them take turns writing in the answers. What ACTUALLY happened though, is that one of my twins, “The Puzzler” appropriated it and began going through Weave Your Word In Me — Part 1 on his own. While I was in the hospital and the Rehab Facility!

Here is “The Puzzler” studying away!

IMG_20171019_213113

He’s been going back and forth between using his printed Bible and his Bible which is on his tablet. Sometimes, he says it is easier to find the verses when using the Bible on his tablet.

One reason I think it was easy for him to just pick up Weave Your Word In Me — Part 1 is that the lessons are relatively short, and the font is of a decent size for him to follow. As I said before, this is printed in color, so in the lessons there are nice, colorful pictures and sidebars to help with learning and understanding each lesson. The first thirteen lessons are just one page, and beginning with lesson fourteen, they increase to two pages. Sometimes, the student is asked to draw a picture of what the scripture reference is about, but most of the time, the student is simply asked to look up the scripture in his or her Bible and use what they looked up to fill in the blanks in the lesson.

All in all, I’m pleased with this curriculum, if for no reason than the fact that it captured “The Puzzler’s” interest enough that he wanted to go ahead and do it on his own, without being told to!

Recovering . . .

A few weeks ago, on September 26, I had a total knee replacement. I was supposed to have surgery on Tuesday and come home on either Thursday or Friday. Unfortunately, my blood pressure kept bottoming out, causing me to pass out when the Physical Therapist would get me up to walk, and I ended up in ICU, followed by going to a Rehab Facility instead of home. 😦  Well, I’m home now, and working on recovery.

Here are my extra legs for the time being . . .

And here is my comforter when I’m resting on the couch . . .

Isn’t he just the cutest?

Ultra Safe Safety Scissors & The Pencil grip 3 Step Training Kit: Our Review

Because I have a son (“The Batman”) who has long struggles with handwriting and printing, I was very pleased to be given for the purpose of this review The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit .  We also received the The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors.  Both product were sent to us from The Pencil Grip, Inc. and I think both products are wonderful for either young children, or those with poor motor control, such as my son.

“The Batman really felt more confident while using the pencil grips. He much preferred the green grip, meant for beginners. He felt that this was the easiest for him.  Here is the order in which they are used for training:

3 Steps For the Best Results In Training

  • The Crossover Grip for Training
  • The Pinch Grip for Transitioning
  • The Pencil Grip for the final step!

The 3 Step Training Kit contains three different grips. For beginners, we have the crossover grip, which has wings to keep the fingers from crossing over, promoting a proper grip. Next, we have the pinch grip, which gives some structure while allowing a little bit of freedom at the same time. Finally, there is the pencil grip, which gives comfort, control, and can be continued as an extended use tool. One thing I really like is something that makes the pencil grips easier for children to use. there is an L and an R on the grips. These are to show your child where to put his or her thumb, based upon whether the child is right-handed or left-handed. This is a very nice, thoughtful touch.

The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors really are just that! They are not dull at all, but they are made with a shield (which you can see in the above picture). This safety shield protects your child from being able to get his or her fingers in between the blades, which I find a good thing, as it prevents those cut fingers which we see often with regular sharp scissors! They are easy to open and close, partly because of the little yellow lever you see above. The handles have a nice fit. Even I tried them, and it was very comfortable for me to fit my fingers into the spaces.

The only thing we found bothersome is that while yes, the protective shield DOES protect little fingers, it also makes it hard to get a clean-cut, if a beginner or someone with poor fine motor control is trying to use them. At the same time, I love that there is a permanent shield. The shield is not going to come off. That is helpful when you have (as we have) one child who has misused scissors frequently.

Here is “The Batman” using the 3 Step Training Kit and the Ultra safe safety scissors:

Progeny Press E-Guides: My Review

In our family, we have enjoyed using Progeny Press E-Guides before, having reviewed one three years ago.

This time, we were given the newest E-Guide The Silver Chair E-Guide which goes with the book The Silver Chair, book 6 in the much beloved Narnia series! This E-Guide was written by Carol Clark, and is as fun and easy to use as any of their other E-Guides!

The author of this Progeny Press E-Guide for the book The Silver Chair received her B.A. in English education, and then her M.Ed. in elementary education, at the University of Toledo. She coordinates children’s ministries in her church, as well as participating in outreach ministries in Toledo, through her local church.

We love these books so much that to do this study, we actually already owned the same boxed paperback set that I bought for myself, I don’t even know how many years ago! 🙂

As you can see by the picture above, this E-Guide is interactive. Your student can simply type his or her answers in and save them, or, you can also print out the pages as you need them.

One of my favorite things about Progeny Press is that it is a faith-based company. I never have to worry about what my children will be learning, yet if there ever is anything which varies somewhat from our doctrine, we can use that as well, as a teaching opportunity.

I really enjoy being given the  E-Guide for The Silver Chair as opposed to a physical copy. With four children, I have gradually learned the value of a downloaded curriculum!

In the 61 pages of this E-Guide, we found a brief biography of the author, some of which I wrote about above. Then you will find the table of contents, some notes for the teacher, and a short synopsis of the story. After this, there is also a short biography of C.S. Lewis, the author of The Narnia Series, including the Silver Chair.

It is recommended that the student/students complete reading the book before doing the study. Well we have read the books, so we went chapter by chapter. Each chapter we would choose a pre-reading activity, We would then read the chapter (or multiple chapters if called for) and go over the vocabulary section together.

Following this are what I feel are god comprehension questions, which helped me to know how well my kids were understanding and retaining what we were reading.

There is also a “Thinking About The Story”, where there are questions to help the children understand the why’s and wherefores of what is going on.

In the “Dig Deeper” sections, we are shown how so much of the story points to Biblical things, and here we find Bible verses to go along with the thinking deeper.

At the ed of the E-Guide are a number of suggested “after reading” activities that your child may b interested, and a resource section where you find a number of additional resources.

Along with this E-Guide, I received an answer key for The Silver Chair
E-Guide. We have really enjoyed working with this!

Just Got Back From Pre-Op!

So, two weeks from today, I will be in the hospital having a total knee replacement on my right knee. I have to have both knees done, but the left one will have to wait a while, as our out of pocket will take time to pay off. They don’t like to do both at once because it makes recovery harder.

I had my pre-op appointment today, for blood work, etc. I thought it was for yesterday, and went all the way out there for nothing! Boy, was that embarrassing! But, we’re alol set now, and they will phone the day before to tell me what time.

Wish me luck!
