Weekly Wrap-Up . . . Christmas Week!

As you may recall, we began the week with Sunday, when I sang a Christmas special at church for the very first time ever. Then, we got rolling with our week!

On Monday, the kids and I ran a few errands, which included going to the doctor’s office to pick up paper prescriptions for those who needed them, and going to shop for gifts for the children in the family we had invited to our home for Christmas dinner. That was so fun, because I really didn’t expect to be able to do much, with what little cash I had left, but a combination of two angels from church helping, plus a sale at Family Dollar Store, where they had all toys buy one, get one 50% off, helped a lot! I had really thought the best I’d be able to do would be some little toys from Dollar Tree, so this was so cool!

On Tuesday, I baked more mini loaves of Banana/Berry/Nut bread and Hawaiian/Banana Bread to use as part of our Christmas morning breakfast, part of the gift for the family who was coming for Christmas, and as part of dessert on Christmas. These are the same breads I made to put in gift baskets for our pastor, deacons and church staff.

My husband managed to get off work a couple of hours early that day, because business was quite slow, so he was able to be home and help with getting the kids ready for church. Our church moved the usual Wednesday service to Tuesday, and had a beautiful candle light Christmas Eve service! Mike was needed to run the sound for the service, and to be there by 5:00 pm to do the sound checks, so it helped that he got off work early, that way we could also get supper done and get there on time! πŸ™‚

After church, we got home, got the kids settled down, watched an hour of TV with them, then got them to go to bed so the marathon wrapping could start! This happens nearly every year, as I tend to need to wait for the payday before Christmas to finish shopping, but it’s also what finally makes me really feel like Christmas, lol! Mike put together the breakfast casserole following a recipe I’ve used for many years while I wrapped, then came in and we watched old TV shows on a retro channel, all Christmas episodes. Think “That Girl”, “The Bob Newhart Show”, “Odd Couple”, etc. πŸ™‚ After the wrapping was done, we went to bed, we knew it would be an early, long day the next day!

Here’s how nice it all looked when we went to bed . . .

Lots Going On . . .

For the first time, in all of the years I have been singing special music at the various churches we have been part of over the years, this year I was scheduled to sing at Christmas! I really love this song, and our youth pastor’s wife Aubrey GranthamΒ (who is soon also going to be our piano teacher!) did an AWESOME job on the piano! πŸ™‚

Meanwhile, at 8:00 straight up this morning, I called the doctor’s office to get new paper prescriptions for “Mr. Loquacious” and “The puzzler”, as they cannot be faxed or e-filed to the pharmacy. I’m hoping they call me quickly to come get them, I have a few last-minute errands, and really would like to combine the errands with picking up the prescriptions, if possible.

I also need to call the pharmacy itself and check on whether they have ordered a medication for “The Batman”, because it wasn’t in stock for them to fill the other day, and the pharmacist on duty at the time was a floater who couldn’t order anything. 😦

We’re having breakfast, and then I plan to get laundry sorted and started washing, after which, while waiting to hear from the doctor’s office that I can come get the prescriptions, I’m going to work on cards for my wonderful hairstylist, Jody Muniz.Β  She chose different colors than what I used in the samples I showed her, so I’m trying a different look and will make one of each and send the pictures of them to her by text before making the rest of them. I think they will come out nice! πŸ™‚Β  I’m also working on a set of cards for someone who won them from a drawing at one of my Close To My Heart gatherings, along with a set of baby scrapbooking pages for a friend who doesn’t scrapbook, but wanted them as a gift for her sister. Which reminds me, as you know, I am a consultant for Close To My Heart, and I want to let you know that there are a bunch of things being retired in order to make room for new, beautiful products! I have seen a sneak peek at the new things, and you’re going to LOVE them, but meanwhile, while you still have a chance to get them, you may view and purchase retiring items here.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas! πŸ™‚

Weekly Wrap-Up . . . Busy Busy! :-)

So, you already know that this past Sunday night our two older boys, “The Batman” and “The Artist” were in our church’s annual Christmas play. On Monday and Tuesday, I concentrated heavily on laundry and working on finishing up our Christmas cards, which I was making, so I could have them done to bring to church Wednesday. I made it, yay! πŸ™‚ We also needed to be at church early that night, as “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler” were singing special music as part of the newly formed group “Cadets For Christ”. Here is a video of their song . . .

Thursday morning, I worked on addressing cards to be mailed out, so that we could get them mailed on our way to homeschool park day. Along with that errand, we stopped at the library to pick up a DVD I had on hold, Mary Poppins. Can you believe, my children have never seen it? Well, since we left the house before lunch, I did stop at McDonald’s near the park and got everyone burgers from the dollar menu. Except for me, I can’t eat them, so I got a grilled honey mustard snack wrap. πŸ™‚

Ah, park day! It is so grand living someplace where we can go to homeschool park day, on December 19th, NOT wearing winter coats!

Here is “The Batman”, he was playing catch with someone, and between throws . . . and do you see the beautiful mountains in the background? πŸ™‚

002

And here is “The Puzzler”, also playing catch!
003

“The Artist” was wandering with friends, and “Mr. Loquacious” never stopped moving, so I failed to get pictures of them.

“Mr. Loquacious”, who I suspected was catching a cold, but had insisted he was “fine” and wanted to go to the park, definitely has one now. He’s sneezing some, but he’s still running around playing and acting normal, so I think he’ll be just fine.

Today is Friday. Do I have my Christmas shopping done? No, I do not. 😦 So, this evening, “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler” will be hanging our with their dad. I will be dropping “The Batman” and “The Artist” off at their Youth Pastor’s home, where they will join the rest of the teens caroling, and then having their Christmas party. Since I do all of my grocery shopping fairly near to their home, I will get groceries while the boys are there, then pick them up. That way, I have them handy to unload the car at home (smart, yes?). This frees up tomorrow, when I will be able to shop alone, and get the Christmas shopping completed.

I hope! πŸ™‚

How was your week? Why don’t you write about it and then link up with us at Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers

Christmas 2023 . . . Teen Drama At Mesa Baptist Church

This past Sunday night, December 15, 2013, the teens along with our youth pastor and his wife put on our annual Christmas play. This year, it was a drama, to show what Christmas could be like in the future, if our country continues on the path we are walking.

001

This play, Christmas 2023, was originally written by Sam Gipp, and was edited for Mesa Baptist Church by Mrs. Aubrey Grantham.

It is the year 2023, and there have been many changes. We have had another world war, and all mention of the Lord Jesus Christ has been outlawed. Children are now removed from the parents when they reach school age and sent to government “boarding schools”, where they are taught humanistic, atheistic views. There are no true churches anymore, all have been turned into social clubs, and the Bible is outlawed.

The Jamison family, upon whom our drama is focused, has been decorating for the “X-mas” holiday, while waiting for one of their own, John, to come home from the government boarding school for the holiday. They come across a box of things from years past, in which they find a nativity scene, Tom’s (the father) old Bible, some CD’s with Christmas carols on it that sing of faith, not of santa. As they begin to reminisce, they talk about the church they used to go to, Mesa Baptist Church, and Pastor Carr, who has not been seen since he was taken away some years previously. At first Tom’s wife is very nervous about finding all of these things, but then, their two other children, David and Susan, begin asking questions, and their parents tell them all about how it used to be.

But then, John arrives home, and sees the Bible. He becomes very upset, and is ready to report them, when the parents convince him that they should go to bed and talk more in the morning. Susan, however, sneaks back and is reading the Bible, when her brother David finds her. The next day, they all talk much about it, including John, and their parents, who had come to salvation many years ago, are able to lead their children to the Lord as well.

During the holiday time, the Jamisons take opportunity to witness to others, including a group of carolers who come to the door. You can watch the carolers in the video below. My son “The Batman” is one of the carolers.

Later, “Santa” comes to visit, as the government has sent a Santa out to all the homes, bearing a “gift”, as you’ll see in the video below. “The Artist” portrays Santa in this drama . . .

The time comes for John to return to his school, and he asks how to be saved, and then declares he will tell everyone about Jesus, and the Bible, no matter the consequences.

I’m doing this post, not just because I’m proud of my boys for being involved in their teen group, or for being in the play, but because the story really touched my heart. I want all of you to KNOW that you need to be saved, if you have never been. God doesn’t want anyone to go to Hell, but as a Just God, He cannot have sin in Heaven. We MUST either pay for our sins, or we must accept the sacrifice He made to cover our sin, by sending Christ in human flesh, to pay for our sin. Please, watch this video, and consider the truth . . .

If you do not know for certain that if you died today, you would be in Heaven with the Lord, then please, please, speak to someone who can show you the way. If you wish, you can contact me, making sure I have your email.

(before I get comments about the “origins” of the term Xmas, please know that I don’t care about that. In today’s culture, it does not stand for what it may have stood for thousands of years ago. In today’s culture, it most certainly stand for removing “Christ” from the word Christmas.”)

Weekly Wrap-Up . . . More Christmas Stuff!

You know, I ALWAYS forget how busy it gets this time of the year, until it DOES get busy this time of the year, lol!

In between planning for Christmas day (we have invited a large family from our church for dinner on Christmas), doing regular household STUFF, trying to figure out the best way to give each of our kids at least one thing they really want, and then fill in around the edges, we have had a church homeschool party, I have had a reviews due, had an order of cards to complete, and am even now waiting for a FedEx delivery of materials to do a new order for the same person!

Tuesday evening, the kids and I FINALLY decorated the poor naked tree that had been standing in the living room for several days . . .
Christmas 2013

In the midst of it all, I try to keep in mind the real reason for this season. We still have things going on at church. Sunday night, my younger kids, “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler” sang with the Sunshine Kids Choir for the special music, as you can see in the video below . . .

Wednesday night, I was on schedule as back up for toddler nursery, and one of the ladies on the schedule had sick kids, so I took her place. I like nursery on Wednesday nights, plus, I was working with a young mom with whom I very much enjoy spending time in conversation, so, win-win! πŸ™‚

Yesterday, we had another homeschool Christmas party, this one with our Thursday park day group. We really had fun! We did potluck, I brought pizza casserole and Totally Bad For You cake (chocolate/peanut butter), for which I was a finalist in the Flint Journal (Michigan) “Merry Indulgences”bake off way back in 1995.

The cake . . .

and the extra frosting to snack on later!

I love potlucks here in New Mexico, we are getting to try lots of stuff we’ve never had before! Some of the things brought were sopapillas, black beans, tortilla rolls, some kind of chili that was really good, and bunches of other wonderful tasting things! We find this variety in our church potlucks as well, and are enjoying it!

As you can see, there is an abundance of food here (and I THINK I took this picture before more people arrived with even MORE food! . . .

Later on, we had a white elephant gift exchange, which is always a lot of fun!

All in all, though this is a busy time, we have been having lots of fun! I hope you are finding time to have fun, yet still keeping your focus on what we are really celebrating here, the birth of our Lord, without whom there would be no salvation.

Putting On The Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions For Busy Moms

I have had the blessing lately of being on the wonderful launch team for the Bible Study, “Putting On The Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions For Busy Moms“, written by Katie Horner.

1441258_10152067303517780_903023884_n

I am excited about this study for a couple of reasons . . . first and foremost, as my regular readers are well aware, I am happiest when I can tell you that something I am reviewing which uses scripture uses only the Authorized King James Version of the Bible, as that is the ONLY version my family, and my church, uses. In her Bible Study, Katie Horner (who blogs at Paradise Praises)has done just that, which makes me happy, and will also please many of my friends!

Another thing I love about “Putting On The Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions For Busy Moms” is that it really does work for us busy moms! I absolutely know how very hard it is to find daily time to be in God’s Word, to study and learn. With this book, you really can spend (most of the time) only about ten minutes at a time, and you will find yourself learning in-depth about the fruit of the spirit.

I love how Katie has pointed out that the Bible is not talking about “fruits”, but rather, “fruit” of the spirit. You can’t just pick and choose which ones you will put on, they are all part of the whole fruit . . . “This is not a fruit-basket life where we can pick and choose which part of Christlikeness we want to put on. No, this is more like an orange, where each virtue is a different slice of the orange. You must have all of the slices together and in their places to have a whole, complete orange.”

With a foreword written by well-known speaker Heidi St. John, this little (approximately 49 pages) ebook packs a powerful punch. You’ll spend between 2 to 5 days on each fruit, finishing up with a day devoted to “The Whole Fruit”. This allows you to focus in small bites for more than one day on each fruit of the spirit.

You will need a study notebook, or you may download (free!) Katie’s companion workbook after you get your Kindle version of the Bible Study.

About the Author:

1395341_10151995971502780_931298934_n

Katie and her husband Tap have been missionaries in Mexico since 2007. They homeschool their four children and minister through church planting, Bible training, bookstore ministry, and homeschool curriculum development.
Katie is a teacher at heart, and by trade, and loves to encourage women in their God-given roles through speaking, writing and blogging. She is the author of this and two other ebooks (at the date of this printing) as well as the Lemonhass homeschool curriculum for Spanish Speaking families.
Katie blogs about marriage, motherhood, and ministry at ParadisePraises.com and she blogs about home education (in Spanish) at EducandoEnElHogar.com.
She has guest posted on various other blogs in her niche and is also the host of Educando en el Hogar, an internet radio show that is part of the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network.

Other notes of interest: Katie’s four favorite things are elephants, dark chocolate, the color purple and the Mayan hammock in her living room. Oh and she’s due with baby #5 in early Feb. 2014.

Today only, December 10, 2013, Katie’s book “Putting On The Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions For Busy Moms” is available FREE on Amazon!

1456503_632667453462127_1683375549_n

Then, for the next 3 days, it will be available at the price of 99 cents . . .

1441326_10152127646382780_1140782977_n

After which it will be at the regular price of $4.99.

I absolutely feel that even if you don’t get it free, or at the reduced launch price, it is worth the $4.99.

If you (or someone you know) would prefer the Spanish language version, that is also available, and for this week only it costs just 99 cents, and Katie has made available the Spanish language version of the Companion Workbook, as well! πŸ™‚

1472050_10152122980237780_1897836609_n

Once again, I whole-heartedly recommend this book and its companion workbook to everyone!

Weekly Wrap-Up . . . Finishing With a Christmas Party!

Well, this week was a seemingly QUICK week! It seems like the week began just YESTERDAY!

You already know that “The Batman” and “The Artist” both are in the teen choir at our church, and they sang special music this past Sunday night.

During the week, in between packing up all of the autumn dΓ©cor (now that Thanksgiving is over) and beginning to get the Christmas stuff out, we worked on “household management”, i.e. getting the house under control again, and catching up on laundry, lol!

We’re taking things easy during the holidays, so no “formal” schooling is going on, but the boys did a lot of reading and viewing educational programs.

Today, though, was our church homeschool group’s Christmas party! As we arrived, we were greeted by “Mrs. Peggy”, who had organized everything for us. We began with some Christmas songs, and all of the kids happily sang along while “Mrs. Peggy” led . . .

Church Homeschool Group Christmas Party 001

Then, we had a story called “The Christmas List”, which I’d never heard of, but I really loved it!

Church Homeschool Group Christmas Party 014

Next, each of the children who had prepared something was invited up to perform. “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler” decided to quote a Bible verse about Jesus’ birth, as you’ll see in this video . . .

“The Artist” played “Angels We Have Heard On High” in this video . . .

and “The Batman played “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” in this video . . .

I’m thinking that we better spend some time practicing before we go back into lessons after the new year, as none of us has practiced in about a year and a half, not since before moving here to New Mexico! πŸ™‚

Next on the agenda, we had visitors, Joseph and Mary, to talk to the kids about their journey to Bethlehem, and the wonderful birth of Jesus . . .

Church Homeschool Group Christmas Party 009

Followed by another story, “The Tale of Three Trees”, which I HAD read before, and still love!

“Mrs. Peggy” had arranged for the kids to decorate sugar cookies. They each got an angel and a “ninjabread man”! πŸ™‚

Devotions From The Torah . . . A Really Good Series!

I have lately been reading through two books written by Author Nicole Vaughn. They are the first two books in a series called “Devotions From The Torah”

Devotions from torah

. . . and I was given copies of the following two books:

Devotions from Genesis: It’s Not Just Ancient History

Devotions from Genesis
and

Devotions from Exodus Part One: Learning to Live in Freedom

Devotions from Exodus

One of the things I like the best about these devotions is that they are not dated, not even by day of the week. I never felt like I was getting behind, and could simply read through as I was able!

I’m primarily going to talk with you about Devotions From Genesis: It’s Not Just Ancient History, as this is the book I have gotten more into depth with during the time I have had both books. πŸ™‚

Here, I will show you the table of contents, because I really would like for you to see how this devotional book is set up for your reading . . .

Section 1: Genesis 1–11:
Discovering the Character of God and
Man through the Creation, the Fall, and
the Flood

Section 2: Genesis 12–36:
Discovering Faith and Obedience through
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

Section 3: Genesis 37–50:
Discovering the Comings of Christ and
Trust in the Midst of Trial through the
Life of Joseph

In this wonderful devotional book, author Nicole Vaughn takes us through the book of Genesis, one chapter at a time, and as you will discover in the introduction, she suggests that you read the chapter in your Bible before reading the topic of each day’s devotion. As she has used the New American Standard Bible for all of the scripture quoted in her book, I would have done so anyway, as I use only the King James Version of the Bible. πŸ™‚ That said, I think you can learn a lot through this devotional book, even if like me, you use different version of the Bible than the one quoted in this book. As with any devotional book, you should always have your own Bible open, and look everything up yourself.

One devotion that I particularly liked was based upon Genesis 2:18, which will quote from my Bible:

“And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him”.

The author goes on to talk about how, after creating all of the plant life, the animals, all of creation, God knew that it wasn’t quite enough, and gave the man a woman to be his wife, his helper. God made the woman from a rib that came out of the man’s side, and in the devotion, the author talks about the importance of this gift from God. Imagine, she was created from a rib out of the man’s side! She was “not taken from his head to rule over him, or be ruled over by him”, nor “taken from his feet to walk all over him or to be walked all over”. No, she was taken from his SIDE, to “complement him, to be his helper, to be his friend”. I think this is important to note, because I hear all the time from people who believe the evangelical position is for the woman to be a doormat. It is not. The husband was given responsibility over his wife, not dominion. There is a HUGE difference, that I wish women (and many men!) of today would see.

Also in this devotion, it is pointed out that God said (in Genesis 2:24) “They shall be one flesh”, which is the first blood covenant recorded.

Our God is a God of covenant. “A covenant is a solid, binding agreement that is made by passing between two pieces of flesh. It supersedes all other relationships and contracts.
It is an unconditional agreement. God created the marriage covenant”.

In this, we see a picture of the trinity, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and we see things that bring us right to the New Testament! n Ephesians, it is taught that the husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church.

When God created the woman, he called her a “helper”. In John, Jesus tells the disciples that God will send a helper. That helper is the Holy Spirit.

This is from this wonderful devotion, and shows the picture of the trinity, as well as connecting the Old and New Testaments:

“In a marriage covenant, we have God as the head, we have the husband who is to love as Christ, and we have the wife, the helper”.

Each devotion begins with a scripture, moves on to a reading about the chapter the scripture came from, and ends with a prayer. I found this book to be very thoughtful, and a good, in-depth devotional, but still easily added into my day as I was able.

Our Church Teen Choir

We have an awesome bunch of teens at Mesa Baptist Church, and Bro. Roger Grantham and his wife Aubrey are so great with the kids! Here they are in a video from last night, singing the song “Glory To God In The Highest” for the special music during the evening service!

I really want to give the Granthams a shout out, because Mike and I have two boys in the teen group and the teen choir. The Granthams have just been wonderful with them, really understanding of their needs, and helping where necessary so that the boys will do well in the group. They’ve even been willing to help with making it possible (in part by having along another couple, the Kuckartz’s, to handle things like medications and keeping “The Batman” on track) for “The Batman” to be included when they go to Winter Retreat, and hopefully summer camp next year, as well.

Thank you, Mesa Baptist, we love you! πŸ™‚
