Apologia Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook . . . Our Review

Our family has very much enjoyed the Apologia Exploring Creation Through . . . books for some time, so when we were given the opportunity to review the Apologia Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook From A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks, We were very excited!

A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks have such an abundance of wonderful Lapbooks that you and your children can learn with, enough really, to cover several years worth of education! I really like the Learning Lapbooks created to go with the science education books written by Jeannie Fulbright.  They are written from a definite Christian perspective, which I so appreciate. So many non-Christians seem to believe that we don’t believe in science, but the truth is that science was CREATED by God.

This project has been fun for “The Artist,” because he really enjoys learning about sea creatures, and is constantly watching programs about swimming creatures on the Science Channel and National Geography channel.

The Lapbook itself takes 13 folders, but as homeschoolers will do, we tweaked it a bit and used a notebook instead. “The Artist” chose green and blue card stock because they are colors from the sea.
Each lesson gives very specific instructions for what to do, right on the page with the mini books to be cut out and glued into the section. “The Artist” kept the various booklets in separate zip bags until he was ready to glue them into the book.

Each lesson component also tells the student where in the textbook to read in order to find the information he or she needs to write in the mini book, something that I personally like. It means that whatever level your student is at, he or she should be able to handle it.

We printed the color version of the cover for “The Artist” to put into the clear cover insert of his notebook.

He was very happy that we were able to do this in a notebook as opposed to the file folders, given that he has done many lapbooks and wanted to do one in a notebook instead. Here he is working on the various chapters, and showing them in his book.

As always, we really love A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks, and highly recommend them!

(Not Quite)Wordless Wednesday, More Freezer Cooking!

Yesterday, “The Artist’ and I did another round of freezer meal prepping. No cooking involved, other than boiling the Penne pasta to al dente. Here is what we did (2 of each meal):

Here are all the meals ready for the freezer:

Here is the seasoned skin and the bones from the rotisserie chicken that we needed to shred for part of the recipes, and what I decided to do with it instead of just throwing it away!

Yep, I’m making bone broth, for the very first time! And due to a mistake in how much Penne was cooked, I’ll freeze some with pasta sauce, and maybe some with this broth. I love this system!

Anniversary!

This past Friday Night, my husband took me to dinner at Outback Restaurant for our 27th anniversary. It was SUPPOSED to be a surprise, but a couple of kids accidentally let slip that something was up. But that was OK, because it gave me the opportunity to mess with them on the actual day, lol! I came downstairs on Friday lazing around in grubs, hadn’t showered yet, etc. One of my kids was frantic all day trying to get me to go get showered and dressed up, and when my husband got home went running to tell him. At that point, he told said child that I knew, and I headed up to get ready. It was so funny!

He took my picture before I could stop him, and I didn’t even realize that my necklace was all askew! Oh well, that’s OK, it was a lovely evening alone with my husband!

Mr. Loquacious Had Surgery!

This past Tuesday, on June 27, 2017, “Mr. Loquacious” had to have surgery on his broken nose. For which we had to travel to Los Alamos, NM. We had to leave home by 4:30 a.m., as I had to get him checked in by 6:45 a.m.

He asked me to record him after and get him to say goofy things, and I agreed, provided he allow me to use the video on this blog. He said it was OK. For the record, I did not even have to get him to say silly things, lol!

First up, pre-surgery photos!

Now, Post-op photos . . .

And finally, videos!

And Mr. “I’m not tired!” yesterday . . .

Amazing Milestone For “The Batman!”

So, as those who know me personally are aware, our son “The Batman” has never been able to tie his shoes. He simply couldn’t make his fingers do the job. Once we could no longer get velcro shoes for him, we found curly laces, which have been perfect for years.

Image result for curly laces image

Recently though, I took him out for new sneakers. He REALLY wanted Batman sneakers, because we have a friend who portrays Batman in Heroes Alliance NM, and he showed our “Batman” HIS Batman sneakers. Well, by the time we got around to getting him some, all they had were high tops. Sadly, the curly laces are just not long enough.

Our “Batman” was determined to learn to properly tie his Batman sneakers, so my husband went to YouTube and found a good, easy instructional video, which you can view here.

It really only took a few minutes of practicing with his new sneakers, and now, he’s tying them like a pro!

And our friend Batman from Heroes Alliance NM allowed me to use the following picture for Our “Batman,” who also, by the way, did in fact give me permission to write about him finally being able to tie on my blog.

A Special Fundraiser We Attended!

On Thursday April 27, 2017, the boys and I attended a special, public fundraiser for Scleroderma Awareness. There were some very special guests there, in addition to some of the children in this area who live with this disease every day, but before I get to these special guests, let me tell you some of what I learned about this disease.

Scleroderma is a rare and debilitating autoimmune disease for which there is no cure. It is often progressive and sometimes, it is fatal. It affects every age and gender. It’s neither preventable or contagious. It confuses even the best of the medical field because it’s difficult to diagnose.

Scleroderma attacks the Vascular System, cutting off blood flow to extremities, resulting in gangrene and amputation. It affects the Gastrointestinal Tract, Heart, Kidneys, Lungs, and Esophagus.  It causes hardening, thickening, and tightening of the skin which often causes devastating results to one’s facial appearance and one’s mobility.

For more information, please check out the Scleroderma Foundation.

Now, do you want to know who came out for this fundraiser? Here are some pictures of my kids and me, along with the special guests who come out to raise funds for special causes such as this, for absolutely no charge!

All of these superheroes are from the “Heroes Alliance NM”. Please, definitely go and check them out, they are the best, I’m telling you. They do this on their own time, tirelessly, with no pay. They care.
