Writers in Residence: a T. O. S. Review

For several weeks now, we have been checking out another resource from Apologia Educational Ministries. This product is called Writers in Residence, and it is a very good, full language arts program, designed to be used over one year.

I must tell you, first and foremost, how overwhelmed I was when I opened the box! Even after reading about this program, I truly did not expect such a BIG Student Text and Workbook! It is an all-in-one book, and this program, Volume 1 Apprentice was written by Debra Bell. And when I say it is big, I am NOT kidding, because it comes in at 575 pages!

There is also a thinner (thank goodness!) answer key for the parent or teacher.

At first, when I saw that the first 30 or so pages were just for me to read, in order to learn how the Student Text and Workbook is to be used, I got a little panicky. I REALLY like for things to be kind of “open and go”, much like the “plug and play” games my kids used to have for the TV. However, once past those 30 pages, depending upon your student, it did end up to be sort of a “let him go to it on his own” sort of thing. There are suggested daily schedules in which he can check off his own boxes as he goes, for example.

Throughout the Student Text and Workbook, there are spotlights on Christian writers. These are very complete interviews with a variety of authors. I had never heard of any of them until now, but have become interested in looking for and reading their works.

This review did hit home with me in that we have never done “formal” grammar lessons, however, to be honest, it does not change my feeling that the way we have taught them, by example and with verbal correction has worked for our family.

I do think that this is a very good writing curriculum however. “The Artist” really enjoys writing stories, and so he was definitely interested in this review. He is always (like every day, in fact!) asking if he can go on the computer to write on one of his stories. He generally has more than one going at a time, sort of like me when it comes to reading books, lol!

I do like that you are encouraged not to force perfection on your child, but rather to reward their effort instead of marking it “wrong.” In my opinion, this helps the child to keep going, and wanting to succeed. I believe though, that we will take more than one year on this one; simply so that one, we can be thorough, and two, we can work at “The Artist’s” own pace.

Logic of English: a T.O.S. Review

Well! This is the first experience we have had with the company Logic of English, and what we received was a very large, very full box!

For our review of Essentials 2nd Edition from Logic of English, we received, as I said before, a ton of stuff! First up, the hard cover teacher’s guide. Coming in at over 600 pages, it is very comprehensive!

Next up, we saw the very nice Student Workbook, for multi-level Reading, Spelling, Grammar & Vocabulary, which is over 300 pages. The really interesting, and different thing about this workbook is that it has three different levels in it, making it easy to use all three levels in a row for your child. It allows you to individualize you instruction for different children. Within this workbook are pages used in many, many spelling, vocabulary, phonics and grammar activities, which you will find in the Teacher’s Guide.

There is also a VERY nice Spelling Journal, A Student Created Reference. (I love the beautiful colors on the cover!) Your student can use this resource to help with troublesome words. They will check them for sounds that have more than one way of spelling, for example. They may enter the word in their journal, categorize by sound, figure out the possible spellings, discard options, and throughout, they are reinforcing the phonograms and spelling rules. This journal certainly will aid the student in mastering common misspellings by giving them a self-created tool with which to help them become more proficient.

Beyond what I’ve already described, we received the following:
  1. Quick Reference Guides (spelling rules, phonogram, etc)
  2. Spelling rule flash cards
  3. Grammar flash cards
  4. Basic phonogram flash cards
  5. Advanced phonogram flashcards
  6. Morpheme flash cards
  7. Phonogram game cards and game tiles

We were also blessed with the Essential Readers, which came in download format. These are great for the struggling older reader, and the one thing I think may convince “Mr. Loquacious” to continue with this. He has an issue with reading “anything that doesn’t interest me, or is to babyish”, but, he’s also resisted formal learning for as long as we have had him, so almost 6 years given that we adopted him and his twin in 2009.

My own personal opinion is that this is a very structured program, whereas I am NOT a very structured person, lol! However, if it works for him, and we can continue without argument, I can force myself int more structure if need be.

The Dragon and the Raven . . . A T.O.S. Review

The boys and I have had the wonderful privilege over the past few weeks of listening to, and reviewing yet another great production from the company Heirloom Audio Productions. This time, we received  The Dragon and The Raven, a very exciting story set in the 9th century.

Along with the two CD package, which runs between two and two and a half hours of listening time, we were given a PDF study guide, approximately 50 pages longer, which allows the parents and students to engage even more thoroughly into the story being told, by providing areas to show how well the students comprehend what they are hearing. There are Listening well questions, Thinking further sections, and defining words, so as to expand the vocabulary.  You can use this verbally as we do, or as a written lesson plan.

As with each of the other Heirloom Audio productions we have had the great fun of listening to, The Dragon and The Raven again begins with two older school boys who meet up with “Mr. George,” based upon G. A. Henty. This is one of many G. A. Henty stories, and I’m very excited to see them being turned into wonderful audio productions!  Ned and Gerald are the school boys, and they are placed into the story by Mr. George as Edmund and Harold.

I love the Heirloom Audio productions, plain and simple. They are producing the stories of G. A. Henty as BEAUTIFUL historical stories to listen to. G. A. Henty wrote wonderful historical fiction, based upon true historical fact. In each of the productions we have had the wonder of listening to, he also involves the two boys into the story, the boys to whom he is telling the story.

One of the other things I love is that these productions give history from a Christian prospective. That is very important to me. Without God, without Christ, their simply is no history, and I want my children to know that. I also want them to learn about calling on the Lord, even in the darkest times when you think nothing will work, instead of turning from Him, as the Saxons did in The Dragon and The Raven.

This particular story revolves around the period in history when the Danes (which is what the Vikings were called at that time), are sweeping over all of England, taking over every kingdom. The young King Alfred of Wessex at the age of only 21, along with his friend Edmund come to realize they may be the only hope to stem the tide, and turn their nation back to their faith in the God they have turned away from.

Will they succeed and be victorious? Will they turn their faith and their nation’s faith back to the God they have abandoned? Will the young King Alfred and his family be able to leave their exile and reclaim their castle? You may want to give it a listen to find out!

Home School in the Woods: My Review

“The Artist” has been working on HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections, another terrific product from the company Home School in the Woods.

He has especially been enjoying this one because this is an election year, and it will be his first time being a voter!

Home School in the Woods is a quality company, and I really like that the Lap-Paks they have can be purchased as downloads. This allows them to be used for more than one child in your family, including being able to wait and use it again with a younger child who may not be ready when you buy it for an older child. 🙂

Other than supplies such as file folders, double sided tape, some fasteners, card stock, paper and optional colored pencils, every thing you will need is in your download, ready to print, cut, assemble and write information into. Below, you can see the supplies that we began with, to use with our downloaded information:

IMG_20160215_132843951

In fact, many of the small informational booklets give you the choice of printing out the insides with lines to write on, or already typed text for those not ready to write in the provided space, or who, like one of my boys, have difficulty writing or printing.

There will be sections requiring that the student look up the needed information that is provided in a printable text. It can be printed as 8 1/2 x 11 pages to keep in a notebook or as is our preference, as a small booklet, which can then be kept in a pocket we make on the back of the Lap-Pak.

Here, you can see “The Artist” working on some of the projects:

Below, you can see how he is keeping the individual projects from being lost of ruined, until such time as they are all completed. At that time, the actual Lap-Pak will be assembled, and all of the separate projects placed into it. This is one of the best parts of doing a Lap-Pak, because it is all contained into one unit, and the student cements the knowledge he has gained every single time he goes back to look at it. We do like this kind of learning!

IMG_20160216_144559563

I have even been able to print out things as needed, and let “The Artist” loose to work on his own. I had to go out for a while, and asked his dad to have him work on some of the projects I had printed out, and to please take some pictures while he was working. I came home to find out that not only had he taken some good pictures of “The Artist” working, Dad had also gotten some very good pictures of the process, too! I had not even thought to get a close up picture of him putting projects into the large freezer bag, which I feel is an important idea!

All in all, we LOVE Home School in the Woods! The Lap-Paks are wonderful, a d quite full of great information. They are not in any way complicated to use, and I can easily recommend them to anyone, home-schooler or not. 🙂

Joy When You Are Are a Born Again Christian

Your position in ministry might unexpectedly change but your position in Christ never will. Our joy comes from who we are in and not in what we do.

Mathew Furan

Mathew Furan is one of the missionaries supported by our church who was suddenly expelled from the country he and his family were ministering to. Please pray as they prayerfully seek God’s new direction for them.

Ladies Bible Study”

Last night I went to our second Ladies Bible Study for this semester. We do two per year, one going on now, and one beginning generally in late summer or early fall, ending before the holidays. It’s every Tuesday, and there is one in the morning and one in the evening.

I really am enjoying the book we are using this time! It is called Glimpses Of God: Revealed through His Names, and is authored by Debi Pryde.

Our chapter leading up to last night was “I Am”, and our memory verse was:

Exodus 3:14

“And God unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

This was a very powerful chapter, bringing out what it means for God to call himself I AM THAT I AM. Throughout the chapter, we saw examples in both the Old and the New Testaments where we see it coming from both God, and from Christ, because they are the same person. And that HE was not created, he simply always has been.

The quote from the author at the end of the chapter really hit me, because of how I’ve felt for some time. I HAVE been praying that God would be with me, because I didn’t feel He was. Here is the quote:

“We don’t need to pray “Lord, be with me,” for He has promised never to leave us. [If we have been born again – italics mine.] Instead, we need to remember who God is and pray, “Lord, give me confidence in your Word and make me know the reality of your presence.”

“When we find ourselves hesitant to face life’s trials and challenges, may we remember the God who declares “I AM”; and may each of us be strengthened by His awesome presence and power.”

It comes down to this, I’ve been feeling that He isn’t there when it comes to me for a while, and asking Him to be. Now, I will start doing what it says to do in this chapter!

Next week’s chapter: Elohim: God the Powerful. Can’t wait! 🙂

My Word For This Year . . . Joy

For the first time, I’ve decided to join with other bloggers in choosing one word for this year. Instead of listing a bunch of resolutions that won’t last past a few months, if that, I’m choosing this one word. Joy.

For several months now, I’ve slowly been losing my joy, and am at a point where I really feel no joy at all. I’ve been dealing with the stress of an as yet undiagnosed illness, along with other stresses in general. I’ve missed more church than I’ve been able to attend, and I love church. I love being in the music ministry, but have needed to step down from that, as well.

I’m not able to work in the nursery at this time, either. The last time I was scheduled, I was afraid of dropping a baby, as a result of the weakness I’ve had for several months.

So, along with aggressively trying to find out what is wrong with me this year, I intend to try as hard as I can to get my joy back. Without it, I am bereft. If you are a believer, I do covet your prayers for me on this, and thank you for reading.

Grapevine Studies . . . A T. O. S. Review

I was quite surprised at how much I ended up enjoying the Birth of Jesus: Beginner (ages 5-7) and Traceable for Beginner (ages 3-6 that I received in digital form from Grapevine Studies to use for this review.

I also was given the digital format of the teacher book, which I like. It allows that I may go through it as we go, without printing it out. I can follow it on my lapbook, and my husband tells me I can put it onto my tablet, as well.

In the teacher edition, there is a completed copy of each student page, along with directions for teaching that particular lesson. This study CAN be completed in as few as five weeks, but you really can also take more time with it, if you either wish to, or need to do so.

There are five lessons:

  • The Announcement
  • The Birth of Jesus
  • The Proclamation
  • The Wise Men & Herod
  • Final Review

As we go along in these lessons, we are filling out a timeline, memorizing key Bible verses (which we look up in our own Bibles), and learning about the Biblical history of our Lord and Savior.

One thing I felt very blessed by, which was totally because of a mistake on my part when filling out what I would like to review; is that I also received the Traceable for Beginner version. It is actually for the very young child, but I do have one son with extremely shaky fine motor control. Because I received the traceables, he didn’t have to draw the stick figures, he was able to simply trace over the very light lines on the page.

It is recommended that you have colored pencils for your children, and dry erase markers for you to use on a white board. I personally do not own a white board, but a piece of paper worked just fine for us. 🙂

There doesn’t need to be much reading for the students. In fact this was a plus for us, since I have at least one child who really, really balks when it comes to reading. I can read the lesson while the kids draw whatever is being covered, in the correct space to draw it.

Depending on the age or ability of the child involved, we are using the traceable version for my shaky hand boy (although he is also doing some of the memorization at higher levels), working with the timeline and drawing the figures in the called for colors, looking at Old and New Testament overviews, Learning basic Bible geography (using the map provided), and learning to use basic Bible study tools. One of those tools is a good Bible dictionary, which we don’t have. However, it was very easy to search a free one out online.

I really, really enjoy this resource! I think it might be fun to go through it every year during the five weeks leading up to Christmas.

This is our first experience with Grapevine Studies, and it works well for the wide variety of abilities in our four boys. I think we would really like to use this method for other Bible studies!

Other Crew Members reviewed this and several other products from Grapevine Studies, and I think you’ll find it worthwhile to go see what they thought! Just click the banner below to check it out:
