Summer Vacation . . . NOT!

So, my kids are still “doing school” as they call it, though their friends are done for the year. As a member of the Review Crew, we receive review products almost year ’round, so even during the summer months they are doing something educational.

They do, however, only have to spend a short time each day for educational work, so really, they can do it and be done and playing with their friends fairly quickly. For example, today “Mr. Loquacious” worked with a review product which you’ll read about in my next post, and we all played an educational game that you’ll hear about by tomorrow! And both were fun!

So, this was just to wet your appetite, and make you want to keep turning in, lol!

As always, i’d love to have you join me on all of my “Journeys Through Life.” Just go to the subscription box and enter your email, then you’ll always know when there’s new content on the blog.

D’Aulaires’ Greek Myths from Memoria Press . . . a T.O.S. Review

Many years ago, we purchased a history curriculum which had a number of D’Aulaires’ books, and I fell immediately in love with them. So, you can understand why I might be excited to be one of the lucky reviewers to work with this set from Memoria Press!

We are reviewing the D’Aulaire’s Greek Myths Set.

We received for the purpose of review the following products:

  • The D’Aulaires’ Greek Myths book
  • The Teacher Guide by Cheryl Lowe and Leigh Lowe
  • The Student Guide, also by Cheryl Lowe and Leigh Lowe
  • A package of flash cards

This study package is well laid out, and makes a great deal of sense. I realize there are some Christians who would question our studying this topic, but right from the introduction of the Teacher’s Guide, the question of “why study Greek Mythology?” is discussed. There were things that I had never really known, such as the fact that next to the Bible, the Greek Myths are the most important set of stories in human history. They are stories which are everywhere in English literature and in our culture, something you can even see in the names of planets, constellations, and even the names of products we can buy!

I like the way that this particular study guide shows that the Greek myths and other ancient stories often are similar to Bible stories. I like that in my opinion, this shows that even without the actual Bible, other cultures have the same knowledge from The Lord, regardless of how they have passed it down. For example, nearly all ancient “mythologies” have the story of the garden of Eden, and the world-wide flood.

The evidence of seeing the similarities can be used to either show proof of the Bible, or if one is contrary, to show that the Bible is also myth, but for my fellow believers, I agree with the authors in that “students who have gone through these thought processes will be prepared for the mythologizing of the Bible that will come later in life.”

We are really enjoying the stories in the D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths, and the study materials only make it better! It is laid out by lesson number, for example lesson one would be pages 9 – 15 in the D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths, covering “Olden Times, Gaea, The Titans, and Cronus.”

Each lesson has the following sections to aid in study and memorization:

  • Facts to know

Facts to know highlights the most important information in the D’Aulaires’ book. It should be drilled throughout the year, after which the student should be able to recite the information at the end of the course.

  • Vocabulary

This section covers words that may be new and challenging, so that they can be defined and discussed before reading, or as they come up while reading.

  • Comprehension Questions

These questions are designed to help the student best identify the virtues and follies of the mythological heroes.

  • Activities

The pictures from the D’Aulaires’ book are so wonderful, and help as a memory aid. The activities sections in the study guide have the student identify specific details that bring the story to life, perhaps even by labeling them in pencil. There are also many enrichment activities, such as maps, timelines and family trees.

The flashcards included in this set are GREAT for review, whether at home or on the go! They re-enforce the knowledge we have gained through reading the Daulaires’ book and using the study guide.

We are enjoying this set, and think you may as well. To find out what other crew members think, please click the banner below.

Bureaucracy!

Having spent the better part of the past few days working on making sure “The Artist” would be able to get the prescription filled that he needs, I have once again come to realize that bureaucracy exists for the sole purpose of making our lives miserable.

“The Artist” is listed on my husband’s insurance, and we are required to do mail order prescriptions, so we get a three month supply. If we fill at a local pharmacy, we pay quite a bit more, for quite a bit less medication. Well, that’s what ended up happening yesterday, once we finally got it all fixed.

The prescription provider wanted a pre-authorization from the doctor, but we were never notified ahead of time. for the record, they never have given us a heads up, either. So the doctor himself spent time on the phone trying to get through to the correct person at the subscription provider, only to be routed from place to place. Our doctor had never received a request for a pre-auth, either, by the way.

Finally, my husband called the place where our prescriptions are filled, and got through to someone. She gave him a good phone number to get right through to the correct department. Then, she faxed a request to the doctor, and they faxed the information back yesterday afternoon.

However, yesterday morning, our local pharmacy still couldn’t get the short term 30 day prescription to go through, so i called. Again. I spent some time explaining (again!) what was happening, and the lady put me on hold for a while. I don’t know what she did, but when she came back she had gotten the pre-auth accepted and gave me a number for it just in case. I was finally able to go to the local pharmacy for the 30 day supply, which he will need to hold him until the 3 month supply is received through the mail, processed and sent to us. BTW, that 3 month supply? $20.00. The 30 day supply purchased locally? $35.00, because that’s how our plan works.

Don’t misunderstand, I am very thankful that we have insurance through my husband’s job, and I still disagree with socialized health care. But really, couldn’t there be a better way to let a patient know they will need a doctor’s pre-authorization? In this day and age, a simple computer generated message via email, text, or phone to say “before your next fill, you will need a pre-authorization from the doctor.” That would be so much better than, say, going to fill your kid’s prescription, and finding out right then that it is needed. What this causes is worry over the patient being jerked off a needed medication, when that is not safe. This needs to change.

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization: A T.O.S. Review

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization IEW ReviewI have to say right away, I personally think that the company Institute for Excellence in Writing is pretty awesome, and *I* thought it would be just great to learn with their Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization, I was NOT so very sure about the kids. As you know, I have all boys. Boys? Poetry? I didn’t know how well that mix would be.

First, here is what Institute for Excellence in Writing provided to us for the purpose of this review:

  • Spiral bound Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization teacher’s book
  • An attractive case containing five CD’s which have all of the poems and speeches for each of the five levels in this course
  • 7 audio MP3’s
  • The DVD “Nurturing Competent Communicators”
  • downloadable e-book of the Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization Student Book

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization IEW ReviewThe Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization teacher’s manual is very thorough!

Institute for Excellence in Writing very generously also included in our package a spiral bound copy of the student book, which you may, if you wish to have it already pre-printed and bound, order here.

Right off the bat is a blue page with special instructions for the owner of this curriculum to go to the IEW website and log into our account. At that time I was able to check off the e-resources I wanted to download. It gives full instructions as to how to get exactly which resources we would be using with the Linguistics through Poetry Memorization course of study. This is where we were able to download the seven MP3’s:

  • Nurturing Competent Communicators
  • Mastery Learning, Ability Development, and Individualized Education
  • Ten Thousand Times and Then Begins Understanding
  • On Listening
  • On Speaking
  • On Reading
  • On Writing

As the owner of this course of study, we were  also able to download the Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization Student pages for personal use only, within our immediate family or classroom. I believe strongly that this is an extremely generous copy-wright policy.

I found it very interesting when reading the Teacher Manual to see how much I had never really thought of. the author Andrew Pudewa, begins by talking about why memorization is very important, especially in this day and age when students are not being taught to use it very much anymore. I don’t know why it is considered useless, given that every single child I have ever known can recite or sing lyrics from a song or a commercial they heard years ago, and in the case of at least a couple of my kids, recite lines from cartoons or movies that are so old I don’t even remember them!

Not only do we read about the “why” of memorization, we read about the “science” of memorization. It helps with brain development. I learned this a long time ago with my oldest child who was born with brain damage as a result of his birth mother’s alcohol consumption. When I would break Bible verses up into sections and give them a cadence such as one might hear in a poem, he could do it. He memorized the whole of Psalm 23 when he was quite young because we did that.

In the course Linguistics through Poetry Memorization, the whole idea is to begin with the first poem in level one (there are five levels), which starts with short, enjoyable poems. This way, one can begin at any age to gain mastery. This plan is similar to the Suzuki plan for music instruction, something I became familiar with through friends who’s children learn with that method.

To teach the program, the teacher and the student(s) recite one poem together several times a day. They can use the audio CD to recite along with, which will help with correct pronunciation. Using the downloaded student book allows for each student to put together their own book of memorized poetry into a notebook. I like this because then they each have the pre-printed  chart for checking off all poems memorized to date. In order to remember previous poems, whenever a new one is started, and recited several times a day, all previously learned poems should be recited at least once per day. Hey, I just realized that this method also will cause ME to learn all of the poems and speeches to mastery, won’t it! How nice!

Another positive about having the downloadable student pages is that several poems come with a coloring page for those who may enjoy personalizing that poem.

We like very much that there is a wide variety of poems and speeches to appeal to all of us. There are poems for the young, poems I enjoy, and definitely poems my boys can enjoy, too! I imagine this course will take us a good long time to complete, but I like that, myself. We enjoy things that we can take our time with, and really dig in deep. I think  in the end, we will (including me!) have learned and memorized all 20 poems in each of the first four levels, and the twenty speeches in level five!

Another Trip To The E.R.!

So, yet again our dear “Mr.Loquacious”, the guy who seems to believe he is indestructible, proved not to be.

THIS time, while on a trip to a local park with the boys next door, he managed to injure himself on some exercise equipment. It seems that he tried to get off of it without bringing himself back to the ground, and the metal bar conked him a good one on the right side of his head.

So, we spent several hours in the E.R. after having done exactly the same thing, exactly two weeks previously when he flipped head over the handlebars of his new bike.

Alas . . . the life of the mom of a daredevil boy!

Solid Tempura Paint Sticks, from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

This has been a very fun review for us! We have been using the Kwik Stix 12 Pack from The Pencil Grip, Inc.  I am going to tell you right now, this is as far as I can remember during my time on the Review Crew, the very first time that when I opened a box with a review product in it straight from the mail, I had two kids quite literally attempting to pull it right out of my hands immediately, lol!

Of all four of my boys, the two who have really been the most interested so far have been “The Artist” and “Mr. Loquacious”, the aforementioned children who attempted to rip THIS

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Reviewdirectly out of my hands, immediately after I opened the shipping box and they saw the following:

IMG_20160504_125338033

It was too funny! I had to make them let go, just so that **I* could take a look at it!

I’ll be honest, I had my doubts about the quick dry claims.

I was worried enough that I considered putting newspaper down on my kitchen table before allowing them to use them, but they got ahead of me. “The Artist” used some pages out of his sketch book:

And “Mr. Loquacious” used a pad of newsprint that I had purchased from a scrapbook store which was going out of business.

IMG_20160503_132819604

IMG_20160503_133120191

“Mr. Loquacious” did a different picture a while back, but wouldn’t let me use it. He wants me to let The Pencil Grip, Inc. know that he wants them to make these in a way that would allow for detail work, lol! However, since he’s stuck in the house after an injury, he got the Kwik Stix out and did this picture for the review. 🙂

By the way, it did not matter one bit whether or not I put down paper first, these Kwik Stix truly do dry super fast, and they did not bleed onto the back side of either kind of paper! How cool is that?
As you may have noticed in the shipping package above, The Pencil Grip, Inc. also included a sample Kwik Stix, as well as a sample pencil grip. My eldest, “The Batman” is my one child who has the most difficulty with writing and printing, because of his disabilities. He asked me if HE could use it, and review it for me so I would know from him how well it works.

IMG_20160504_125540624

“The Batman” is left handed like me, as you can see. Now, you can see in the picture how he needs to hold a writing utensil. The instructions for the pencil grip said to use it with the thumb on the letter L for left handed writers, and the thumb on the R for right handed writers. Unfortunately, “The Batman” had a lot of trouble using it with those instructions, however. He needed to reverse it, and put his left thumb on the letter R. It seems to work very well for him that way!

We are VERY pleased with this product, and think you would be as well, but don’t take my word for it, go along over and read what the other Crew Review members had to say! Just click the banner below, and it will take you to all of the reviews!

Emergency Room . . . Again!

So, “Mr. Loquacious”, our most dare-devil kid once again thinking he must be indestructible, wiped out on his new bike and had to go to the emergency room yesterday. Thought this time he really might have fractured something or sprained it, but it turned out to be very deep bruising. He sure was in substantial pain, though! They x-rayed the injury, and we went home with a sling and a prescription for pain medications.

GREEMU: A TOS Review

I have recently had the fun of trying out a product for the moms, as opposed to just for the kids!

GREEMU is a plant based alternative to Emu Oil, which we reviewed last year. GREEMU is distributed by Devonian, and is available from Koru Naturals.

As more and more people begin to turn to plant based products instead of animal based, particularly when it comes to cosmetics and skin care, this is a fine new addition to the line up!

GREEMU contains natural ingredients such as

  • Rice Bran Oil
  • Sunflower Seed Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Macadamia Seed Oil
  • Palm Oil

We received a 4 fluid ounce bottle of GREEMU to spend a few weeks trying out. I applied for this review not just for myself, but because two of our boys, “Mr. Loquacious” and “The Puzzler” are African/American, and one of them, “Mr. Loquacious”, is GREATLY resistant to putting lotion on his skin and/or oil in his hair. My hair stylist, who also cuts their hair, consistently has to put what looks like a LOT of oil on his head after he gets his hair cut! So, this is why I thought using this product might help.

“Mr. Loquacious’s” biggest issue is always with either the scent, the feel, or both when it comes to lotions or oils. GREEMU, however, is practically scentless, and is not greasy at all. So far, I think the use of GREEMU for them is a good choice, since they tend toward very dry and scaly scalps without some kind of oil. If I can get them to continue use (or at least “Mr. Loquacious”, since “The Puzzler” is completely willing to use it), I believe. I also think it may be helpful on their elbows and knees, which tend to get ashy looking. As I said before, “The Puzzler” will put lotion on every night whether reminded or not, while “Mr. Loquacious” will not without putting up a fight. Hopefully, this will change. 🙂

I personally really love the feel of GREEMU on my own skin. I have been ill for some time, and haven’t been taking care of my skin or wearing make up. I have decided to try putting a drop or two on my face and rubbing it in, as a way of getting back to taking care of my skin. So far, I am pleased with the results. It really does take only a drop or two, and any that is left on my hands can be rubbed into them and onto my elbows.

As you read above, last year I reviewed the Emu Oil which can be purchased from the same company as GREEMU. I will tell you now that as nice as GREEMU is (and it is nice!), I personally preferred the Emu Oil. When I used it, my skin appeared to feel softer for a longer period of time, but that could just be me. They feel and smell almost identical, with the exception of one being slightly thicker than the other. Also, as I don’t have issues with sticking to plant based products, I don’t mind using the Emu Oil. I do know people who feel strongly on the topic however, so I feel that this is an excellent product for them, and I applaud Devonian Health and Beauty for spending the time and effort to develop it.

YWAM Digital Unit Studies: A TOS Review

For a few weeks now, along with 99 other crew review members, we have been reviewing one of the wonderful YWAM Digital Studies from YWAM Publishing.

A little something I had wondered about this company was what, exactly, the initials stand for, so I wet looking on their website.
According to the FAQ, YWAM is Youth With A Mission, and these unit studies are from the publishing division of the organization. Having looked at the YWAM site, it looks like a very good organization!

My boys and I were fortunate in that we received my very top choice when I applied, and thus, we have been reading the book Corrie Ten Boom, Keeper of The Angel’s Den and using the Digital Unit Study to go along with it.

For our review, we were sent the book Corrie Ten Boom as a physical product, and the unit study as a digital product.

I remember reading the story of Corrie Ten Boom in the book “The Hiding Place” when I was much younger, and have wanted to introduce her to my own children. I want them to fully understand that no matter how difficult they themselves often find it to choose their faith over fear of anything, whether it be fear of ridicule, fear of violence, or whatever it may be. Corrie Ten Boom is SUCH a wonderful example of this, along with her family!

Corrie and her family lived in Holland, in a home above their watch shop. Holland was eventually invaded by the Nazis, Corrie’s family, the Ten booms; began working to help save the lives of Jewish people who were, as we all know now, were in terrible danger.

They hid Jewish people in their home, and were part of the underground to help Jews escape the Nazis, and the death camps.

The Ten Boom family was eventually caught and arrested. Corrie and her sister were sent to a concentration camp called Ravensbruck, where they were definitely in danger of being killed by being gassed.

Corrie’s faith never wavered, though, and through it all, she showed others how to be tankful for even tiny things, such as the tiny fleas which infested the barracks in which she and her sister were held. Because of the fleas, the guards NEVER even stepped foot inside, which allowed the Ten Boom sisters to study their hidden Bible at night.

The Digital Unit Studies from YWAM are so good, and work for the different levels of our children.

I will tell you, that as we do with many unit studies, we are doing this as a group. Questions are given for each chapter, and we discuss them out loud. This seems to help with learning even more than trying to write everything out, particularly if you have reluctant writers.

The questions mentioned above, are always my favorite part when we are studying something, because if a question sparks another question, and another, then so much the better and we’re off on a rabbit trail! 🙂 However, there are geography sections, ideas for social studies, hands on activities, essays, and so on, therefore, there should be something that will work for just about everyone!

We like YWAM Unit Studies, and we think you will, too!

To read what 99 other crew review members think of this and other YWAM Digital Unit Studies, please click here.

As always, I would just love it if you would join my on all of my “Journeys Through Life”. Just go to the subscription box at the top of the blog and enter your email, and then you will always be notifies when there is a new post! Hope to see you here! 🙂
