Early History of the U.S. Coast Guard:Exploring the U.S. Life-Saving Service 1878-1915

(Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.)

My son was interested reviewing Rebecca Locklear‘s Exploring the U.S. Life-Saving Service 1878-1915: 17 Student Workshops with 120 Activities because he liked the idea of reading about maritime rescues.

Exploring-the-US-Life-Saving-Service-1878-to-1915

Author Rebecca Locklear has written this book in order to help students learn about the precurser of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Locklear’s great-grandfather Ernest “Skipper” Eldredge was part of a seven-man crew, helping to row a wooden surfboat over huge breakers into the ocean to rescue crew and passengers on sinking ships. Justifiably proud of him, the author learned a good deal about what he did, and wrote this book to help students learn about what happened during that time, and about the U.S, Life-Saving Service, which eventually became the U.S, Coast Guard.

We received for the purpose of this review the digital version of the book Exploring the U.S. Life-Saving Service 1878-1915: 17 Student Workshops with 120 Activities. This book is 117 pages long. It has four units, with 17 student workshops and 120 activities. Here is some of what you may expect, and what grade levels they could work for.

Unit 3: The Culture of Character

  • The Character of Men 8 – 12 70

Unit 4: Relevance Today

And so much more!

“The Artist” chose to focus on Unit 2, and did a couple of the worksheets that were available for it.

Locklear 17Locklear 18

He also did a project related to the smelling salts that were used when necessary.

Locklear 12

I helped my son gather the needed supplies, and he went on to create his own energizing salts by following the recipe. We already had the dried rosemary, so we went to the store for Lemongrass leaves. Unable to find them, we bought actual Lemongrass.

locklear 1

It was very difficult to grind or grate it, so he just chopped it up. I had all of the essential oils except for Rosemary, so a dear friend gave me the 20 drops he needed. We purchased the course ground sea salt at the grocery store. The day he was going to make this project, my Essential Oils order arrived so then we had enough Rosemary oil along with everything else, to make two jars.

Locklear 2

“The Artist” proceeded to add the ingredients together:

Then, filling the jars! We had spent time at the grocery store looking for just the right size jars when “The Artist said “Why don’t we just re-use those glass jars that gravy came in?” (we had bought some jarred gravy a few days before). So these are the jars he used.

Locklear 3

Filling them was easy, he made a couple of funnels out of parchment paper that we already had, the filled them one spoonfull at a time, alternating between the jars.

Locklear 9

Full!

Locklear 10

“Mmmm! Smells good!”

Locklear 11

Because the initial 20 drops of Rosemary oil came from our friend Savannah, we decided to pretty one jar up and give it to her. Here it is all prettied up.

Locklear 13

And, gifting it!

All in all, this is a really good book, filled with true-life stories from the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s. There is so much I didn’t know, even to the fact that this organization had even existed! It’s fascinating, and there are projects for each and every unit, allowing you and your student(s) to focus on the area which interests them the most.

Putting Up Freezer Meals During Covid-19

Recently, “The Artist and I put up a bunch of new meals for the freezer. During Covid-19, it’s a little more difficult because stores are limiting how much of each kind of meat we can buy. So what I’ve been doing is creating a menu which doesn’t call for too much of one meat, but varying it up so as to be able to get what I need. Here’s the menu for this time around.

5.30.2020

We put up 2 of each of these meals, plus two extra Honey Dijon Chicken meals. The Salmon meal I just froze separately so that it could be made with fresh dill the day we decide to have it.

Here are the fruits of our labor!

5.0.2020 2

Here are some of the meals, ready to eat! Yummy!

HelpTeaching Pro Subscription {Review}

(Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.)

I have been using the HelpTeaching Pro Subscription from HelpTeaching.com to help my sons improve thinking skills in writing, and also to work on vocabulary skills.

Worksheets with questions helped “The Artist” to think about the answers before just throwing something down as a guess.

“The Batman” has very poor fine motor control skills, so I kept his work to a minimum, as far as writing. Here are some worksheets he did, one about his favorite movie and one with simple addition, which because of his developmental disability, he’s still learning.

helpteaching 9

Here are some of the word search puzzles he has done so far:

helpteaching 10

And he’s looking forward to having me use the word search generator to create some based on specific interests, such as Marvel movies or anything Batman (go figure!)

Here is a screen shot to show you just SOME of what is available in the HelpTeaching Pro Subsription.

There is a lot available on the free side of HelpTeaching.com, but the HelpTeaching Pro Subscription offers a good deal more. With more flexibility when it comes to the  creation of and scheduling of unlimited online tests and worksheets, you can endlessly provide your students with new topics and interests. You can also access and use online lessons for a plethora of topics, and you can even send up to 500 students into their Test Room. I only have two, but you know, maybe you want to share what you have created with other teachers and homeschoolers!

You can browse tests and work sheets fromthe following topics:

One of my favorite area is titled:

30 Things I wish I learned in High School

Why? because there are quite a lot of things that it would be great for young people to learn which really have very little to do with academics, such as:

  1. Basic study skills
  2. Time management
  3. How to practice self-care
  4. How to Navigate the healthcare system
  5. Healthy habits
  6. How to prepare a meal
  7. Simple household tasks
  8. Basic car maintenance
  9. How to buy a car
  10. Get a credit card (and use it wisely)
  11. The basics of saving and investing
  12. How to get through college without student loans
  13. Setting and achieving realistic goals
  14. How to handle failure and rejection
  15. Negotiation skills

And that is only HALF! With each one, there is information to help you. this section would not be a bad thing to check out if you are an adult, and either need a refresher or simply never learned these things.

HelpTeaching.com even has their own blog!

Here is a nice little chart from HelpTeaching.com to show you the difference between the free membership and the HelpTeaching Pro Subscription:

I love using the HelpTeaching Pro Subscription for my boys! It enables me to both create and use already created materials at a moments notice, which works in our household.

Covid Hair

As everyone knows, we all were missing (and in a lot of cases, needing) haircuts. This is me, mid shut down:

IMG_20200606_122804

When salons in my state were finally open at 25% capacity, I finally got an appointment. My regular lady had had a very bad motorcycle accident only three days before the governor allowed partial opening, so one of the other stylists (Nicole) in her shop covered part of her clients, including me.

Me, after getting home from my appointment:

Covid Nails

March 18, 2020, we found out we were about to have an approximately 2 week shut down due to Covid 19. So I went to get my nails done because I was already a week or so past due. Since I wear acrylic nails because my natural nails have been very brittle ever sich having very bad Hyperthyroid problems in the early 1990’s, I thought it best to get them taken care of.

IMG_20200318_160410

This polish changes color. in the above picture my hands are warm.

The following picture was taken on April 13, 2020, almost a month later. Our two week shut down was at about a month at this time.

IMG_20200413_202615

This picture is from about mid May. I had to take the handled toenail clippers and a strong file to them, because they were coming apart and causing a great deal of pain.

IMG_20200603_092909

Finally, our governor decided to allow salons to be open at 25% capacity, with precautions, on June 1, 2020. I was able to get an appointment on June 3.

Finally!

Five Minute Friday ~ Normal

I’ve decided to join the FMF fun. I was given a word prompt, instructions to set a timer for 5 minutes, and just write. To check it out, go here. This week’s prompt word is Normal. And, go!

They keep talking about the “New Normal.” the press, the governors, comunity leaders, and now, just people. A LOT of people, who don’t seem to realize what the term “new normal” even means.

New normal is not a temporary thing. The first time I ever heard the term was when my best friend’s husband died. One day when I asked how she was handling things without him, she said she was learning to live with her “new normal.”

“New Normal” is not a temporary thing like our governor and the press would have us believe. The term itself is a permanent thing. Are we in a new normal? If so, I resist, my family resists, and will do so forever.

And, end!

Mastering Essential Math Skills Book 2 {Review}

(Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.)

I have always been intimidated at the thought of teaching Math to my children so I was excited to be offered  Mastering Essential Math Skills Book 2 Middle Grades/High Schoolfor my family’s review from Math Essentials.

Math 2

Please let me tell you about Mastering Essential Math Skills Book Two. This is a very nice work text. Sturdy, with a nice glossy cover. This book is 158 pages, eight chapters, plus the teacher answers in the book.

The eight chapters cover:

  • Whole Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percent
  • Geometry
  • Integers
  • Charts and Graphs
  • Word Problems

Ath the end, there is a Final Review Section and an answer section. Note: I’d love to see the answers in a separate book, bundled with the work text. Ask me why!

There is also a Resource Section which has a glossery, an Inportant Symbols page, and several charts.

This book, as well as the other books being reviewed by Review Crew families includes online, video lessions to take you all the way through. The courses are taught by Rick Fisher, a Math instructor for  over 31 years within the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, California. His sixth grade students would regularly bypass the seventh grade math program and move directly to a high-powered eighth grade algebra program. The videos are password protected, and you must have to book to get in. For “The Artist,” this was very helpful. A number of times, he really needed them to “get it.” In twenty minutes or so per day, a student can easily refresh skills they have forgotten, or if they are just learning these concepts, these lessons will help the student to better succeed.

Each day “The Artist” watched the video for the lesson, and then do hus book work.

Math 4Math 3

Math 1

Having just realized he wasn’t doing the review problems, I told him that was going to change. I had been letting him self direct, but between that and the answer section, I think either his dad or I will be needing to do something at the table during Math time! This is what he’s going to see, if he tries looking in the back again!

Neither myy son “The Artist” or I care much for  Math, but he had gone through the No-Nonsense Algebra book from Math Essentials during an earlier review and I went through Math Refresher for Adults. Both of us really learned using them. When I offered him the opportunity to be the student for this review, he happily said that he would. and I had gone through the Math Refresher for Adults. You can check out those reviews here.

Beyond the Stick Figure Art School

(Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.)

I was so happy to get the opportunity to receive a great homeschool art curriculum called the Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS 3 Bonus courses from Beyond the Stick Figure Art School!

Stick figure 2

My son “The Batman” gets very upset when he is unable to draw like his brother “The Artist,” so when I showed him the sample lesson before applying for this review and saw how excited he was to try it, it made me very happy. You can check out the sample lesson by going here and scrolling down to the second video. This video was what showed my son that he COULD do this!

This course will be great for our entire family! “The Batman,” his Dad, and I are all at a very, very beginning level. Right now, “The Batman” is the only one using it, but his Dad has expressed interest, and I may try it myself. Our son “The Artist” is very interested in the other courses, as he is a natural artist and far beyond our abilities.

The bundle we received for the purpose of this review are:

  • Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course ($525 value)

3 parts with 53 video lessons and a rubric to evaluate your own work.

stick figure 4

  • Watercolor and Pen & Ink Course  ($297 value)

2 parts with 15 video lessons.

stick figure

  • Introduction to Acrylic Painting Course ($325 value)

3 parts with 52 video lessons.

Stick figure 3

  • Introduction to 3 D Design Course ($298 value)

3 parts with 30 video lessons.

Untitled

With lifetime access and email support, this bundle is well worth it!

Right now, “The Batman is the only student. He is really loving this, and asks almost every day (sometimes even on the weekends) if he can do “Art school, Mom?” Unless we are very busy, I usually say “of course!” He is very focused on the drawing course, which starts at the very beginning, with extreme basics such as circles, straight lines, dots and curved lines.

stick figure 10

There are downloadable worksheets, which “The Batman” really liked, especially when he learned how to print them himself from his Chromebook.

stick figure 11

The teacher, Sally showed him how to put straight lines, circles and curved lines to make a simple flower.

stick figure 5

At Sally’s direction, “The Batman made a sheet with the colors in his marker kit, labelling them with color name and number. His brother helped him by writing the labels.

stick figure 13

On another sheet, he showed the primary colors, and which ones went together to create secondary colors.stick figure 14

Being encouraged to let himself go and make abstract art while practicing the circles and the straght lines, for example, hgas really made a difference in his thinking. He is realizing that it doesn’t matter if his art is like “The Artist’s,” his is just as good but different!

All in all, we really like this curriculum!

In order to see all of the lessons ahead of time, you need to mark everything completed. This is literally the only thing I would love to see changed. I’d like to see a better method for the parent to see this without having to do this. We ended up letting “The Batman: pretty much do this on his own, coming to me only when he didn’t understand something, and marking it all completed would have been confusing for him. He is developmentally delayed, so it was important to have him be able to simply check the next uncompleted lesson.

The Hidden Message of The Great Seal {Review}

(Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.)

IMG_20200504_131810

Our family has been enjoying adding to our history studies with The Hidden Message of The Great Seal How Foundational Truth From The Dawn Of Liberty May Rescue A Republic In Peril from The Hidden Message, LLC.

This is a very high quality soft cover book. Large enough to set out on a coffee table, with it’s glossy cover and pages full of information, it prompts the reader to pick it up and learn.

During this time of Public Heath Orders all over the United States of America, I believe this is an important book. Reading this book reminds me that we must balance these orders with our God given rights as set out in our country’s original documents. We must not simply let go of liberties in exchange for safety. We further must stop our children from being taught a watered down version of history, and make sure they learn what our founders actually said when establishing this great country and it’s Great Seal.

Written by Michael Kanis,

Michael-Kanis-682x1024

this book is a fascinating study regarding the meanings and messages found by examining the clues used to piece the whole together. In 24 chapters, Kanis very clearly shows that the hand of God was in the details of the Great Seals creation. In the short introductory chapter, Kanis points out that learning the foundational truths found in the Great Seal “may rescue a republic in peril.” In this book, you will find the following chapters:

  • Time Capsule
  • The Significance of The Seal
  • Setting The Stage
  • A Tale of Two Systems
  • Studying the Seal
  • How Could it Have Been Hidden So long?
  • Charles Thomson
  • Francis Hopkinson
  • The Pyramid
  • Annuit Coeptist
  • Novus Ordo Secorlum
  • The Eye
  • The Early Designs Part 1
  • Early Designs Part 2
  • The Covenant
  • The Front of The Seal
  • The Four Pillars
  • Virtue
  • Freedom
  • Providence
  • Unity
  • Unexpected Connections
  • Conclusion

Followed by six pages of endnotes.

In 256 pages and including 295 images,

IMG_20200504_131919

Kanis offers much evidence for the reader to use in deciding whether the claims he has made are possible and true. He invites the reader to come to an independent conclusion.

As a Christian, he has written this book to show us the providential hand of God in shaping the United States of America, and the details of the Great Seal. From the Mission Page of the website of The Hidden Message is the following message we must understand:

“Our republic is at stake, this I do not debate. History and reason and the seal make the claim. I merely echo the warnings of Washington and Adams and Franklin. Of Madison, and Henry and Paine. Of Locke and Montesquieu and Bollingbrooke, of Cato, Plato, Polybius and Cicero. These and many more beside. And all merely add their voice to what God has already made clear through the scriptures.”
