It’s Christmas Time!

And as always, time is very full, and running short! We have two children in the Christmas play tomorrow night at our church, so they have needed to be there for several rehearsals. The name of the play is “Christmas Hang Ups”, and the children are costumed as ornaments. One of our boys is a cowboy ornament, the other is a Michigan ornament, in honor of where we came from.

Since the twins have play practice late this afternoon, and their dad is doing the lighting, he will take them, while I take our two older boys for their hair cuts. I have a hair appointment tomorrow, so it’s been decided that the twins can get their hair cut while my color is setting.

This week, we have a group of people from church doing Christmas caroling. Last night, they came to our street, and my husband and I went to the doors to invite our neighbors out to hear the singing. we gave them each a dozen cookies, a Christmas card, and an invitation to our children’s play, along with our beautiful candlelight Christmas Eve service. Tonight, we will go do the same in someone else’s neighborhood, and THEY will be the one’s going to the doors.

All in all, it’s been a very busy couple of weeks, and I’ll be very happy when all the rush is over, even though a lot of it has been good. Doing the caroling, which was meant to be a blessing to others, turned out to be one for us, as well, especially as we kept hearing from people that they didn’t think anyone still did caroling! I hope you are all enjoying this time of year, too! 🙂

Been Busy, Busy, Busy!

November was hugely busy. First, a whirlwind trip back to Michigan for a loved one’s funeral. Let me tell you, you know when you have very special friends who make it possible for that to happen, without whom I would not have been able to get there, have a place to stay, a car to borrow, get home, and have money for expenses. Thank you both, you know who you are, and I love you both, very, very much! After that, between time change weekend and going back and forth between three time zones, I was REALLY tired for a while, but am better now.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working on a large order (100 cards) of Christmas cards for our hair stylist. I have 40 more to make, which she will receive by Wednesday.

Our Thanksgiving was very quiet, just us this year, and my husband worked until 2:30 that day, so we simply had dinner at our usual dinner time. I prefer to do that on holidays anyway, if possible, rather than trying for a mid-day meal. I’ve no wish to be up in the middle of the night to put in a turkey like my mom did.

Our Christmas tree is up, though not yet decorated. I’ll post pictures once it is, though.

Well, there you have it, a quick update. There will be more in future posts, as soon as I have time to upload photos and such . . . things like my teens at the turkey bowling their youth group did, lol!

What’s New?

I know I have not been writing as much as I usually do lately. We are in the process of moving, and on top of that, I’ve been under the weather.

We’ve spent the past two days doing our move in inventory check-list for the new house, and there’s a lot that needs to be taken care of. But, once that all is done, I think it will be a good place.

Our two oldest, “The Batman” and “The Artist” were off to teen camp with our church yesterday, and will be gone until sometime Friday afternoon. The best part is that unlike Winter Retreat, I did NOT have to get them to the church so early in the morning that it was still dark! 🙂 This time, they had to be there at 11:45 a.m., a much more decent hour, lol!

I will try harder to keep up to date on our move and everything else, as time and internet connection permits, but we’ll be disconnecting stuff next week, so it’s all in what my phone hot spot can handle. 🙂

Weekly Wrap-Up: Found Our House, and Father’s Day Fun!

I had mentioned to you before that we were looking for a nice rental home closer to our church . . . well, we found one!
our house

And boy, is it ever close to our church! We will be going from a drive that takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes down to a 2 minute drive! In fact, there is a balcony off the master bedroom, and we can see the steeple on top of our church! 🙂 We will be signing the lease this coming Monday, and taking possession at the beginning of July, which then will give us plenty of time to get everything moved, and still have time with our current rental empty for move out cleaning.

This morning, we went to a Father’s Day thing at a local Chik-fil-a, where they were doing games, fathers got to eat for free, and got to meet Preston Dennard.

From information given on Mr. Dennard’s website:

“For eight years Preston was a top-rated National Football League wide receiver. He has been featured in Sports Illustrated, Pro, and other numerous magazines. Preston has proven his athletic talents professionally as an outstanding veteran with the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and the Green Bay Packers. He was named Most Outstanding Receiver and twice nominated “N.F.L. Man of the Year.”

Mr. Dennard and our family have mutual friends who attend our church, a very nice couple who some time ago told him about our son “The Batman” and his obsession with sports cards. He was kind enough to send one for “The Batman” via our friends, but it was not JUST a plain card, oh no. It was autographed, and it was in a clear protective display case. “The Batman” sent him a thank you card. Today, when we met him, he remembered, because of that card, I think. Here is a photo of “The Batman” with Mr. Dennard.

And here are all the boys with their dad, along with the Chik-fil-a cow.

Everyone had a great time, and then I went on to get groceries, while the guys went with their dad for his hair cut, then out for lunch at DQ. Today was a pretty good day! 🙂

A Life In The Balance: A T. O. S. Review

When I was given the opportunity to review the book “A Life In Balance”, which is available from the Learning Breakthrough Program. I was primarily interested in it because I have four special needs boys.

“A Life In Balance” is an EXCELLENT read, centering upon the memoirs of Frank Belgau, the man who actually developed the LearninBreakthrough Programg .

This is an “as told to” book. Eric Begau, Frank’s son, wrote the book based on all of the things his father told him. It is currently available for $16.94.

I was pretty much hooked right toward the beginning, when Frank described being bullied because of his differences, and treated differently in school. For example, each year, the students had to take an IO test, and then they were assigned their seating in the classroom accordingly. The highest scoring children in the front row, with the lower scoring kids behind them, and the lowest in the back row. That’s where Frank was, along with the only boy with a lower score than he. That boy bullied him unmercifully. Frank wasn’t all that coordinated, so the boy would chase him until he tripped over his own fee and then beat him up badly. I think that was the beginning of Frank’s journey of problem solving, because he came up with an idea which in short order made the bullying from thaqt boy stop. But I’m not going to give you any spoilers, lol!

Through Frank’s time in the military, he further honed his ability to solve problems, because as someone who worked on airplanes, he learned from a mentor there that the most important thing was not what the “bean counters” thought, it was to make sure those planes were safe, because our guys were fighting combat missions. I think he learned to see “the puzzle” when looking at a problem and how to solve it, rather than looking at only what others thought was best.

As an educator, his methods were certainly unorthodox, to say the least! He took on a special needs class (they were then called “educable mentally retarded students) for an hour each day to help their regular teacher get a break. The principal basically said the best thing to do was have them put their heads on the desk and cover them with newspaper! Frank did not. Instead, he gave them projects, expecting them to do it. Well, he did well, and so did the project of one of the kids!

Eventually, Frank developed the Learning Breakthrough Program, designed to help children with learning disabilities learn to read. It has now been discovered that anyone can benefit from the “brain training” in the program Frank designed.

It is certainly not necessary to purchase the Learning Breakthrough Program to benefit from this book. I know from my own experience with my eldest child, adopted at age two and not expected to be able to even learn to read, let alone anything else, has certainly benefited from a lot of what Frank gives us in this book, and that was way before the book was even written! At the back of the book, Frank details exercises that help the child (or anyone who wants improved brain function!)

I found Frank Belgau’s memoir to be a fascinating read, but don’t just take my word for it.

Soulwinning–The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (IBTR #30)

This is very good. My Pastor (http://www.mesabaptist.org) often talks about how so many churches rely on what he calls ” 1, 2, 3, pray after me” in order to increase numbers. Our Pastor back in MI felt the same way, and was completely supportive when we wanted to be absolutely sure our younger kids really understood what they were doing before becoming “saved” and before we allowed them to be baptized. They needed to come to an understanding that it wasn’t just so they could have Lord’s Supper. They thought it was a snack they were being denied, lol! I’m so gratefull that all four of my boys are saved and baptized, and truly understand the decisions they made, even with their special needs. Unfortunately, we have also been in churches in the past in which numbers were the be all and end all, which is sad, and which I believe causes a lot of false professions of faith because people, especially children, are pushed to make a profession they don’t even understand.

soulwinning

If there is anything Independent Baptists can hang their hats on, surely it is their soulwinning efforts. It has seemingly always been an emphasis. Even if we must point out areas worthy of reform, we must give credit where credit is truly due. Independent Baptists have carried the Gospel all over the world. Even the problem areas worthy of concern are not an issue in most Independent Baptist churches as only in a few is it a serious issue.

The Good

Can you imagine the number of doors knocked, the tracts given, the Scriptures printed, collated, and given over the years? It is absolutely incalculable. I have seen some of the boldest people among us walk right up to some brawny, agitated guy and tell them that Jesus came to save.  I have seen so many times what I believe to be deep sincerity in one telling of the…

I Am Pro-Life Because of My Mother

My mother also had an unplanned, unmarried pregnancy, me. In her case, she and my dad married, and were together until his death nearly 36 years later. However, in an era when society judgement often caused parents to force there daughters to give up babies like me, my grandmother told my mom that she’d help raise me, if my mom didn’t want to marry. My parents were 17 and 18 when they married, and my mother hid her wedding ring under my dad’s class ring so she wouldn’t be thrown out of high school in her senior year. I love my mom and dad and miss them very much, and am very thankful that my grandmother ignored societal judgement in the 1950’s when girls were made to marry, have an illegal abortion, or give their baby away. I am, and always will be, unabashedly anti-abortion.

theministrymama's avatarThe Ministry Mama

I Am Pro Life One of the most popular debates of our day is the pro-life and abortion topic. I must declare in honor of Mother’s Day that I am pro-life because of my mother.

A Humbling Choice

In 1982 my mother came home to her parents expecting a child. She would become an unwed mother at the age of 20. After living away from home for some time, she humbled herself and asked if she could come home. My grandparents received her back home declaring they would make lemonade out of life’s lemons.

A Decision to Make

My mother contemplated the decision on whether to keep the child or give the baby up for adoption. As a Christian, she knew if she were to give up the baby, the adoptive family might not tell her baby about Jesus Christ or the gift of salvation. She decided to keep the baby so she could…

Once More . . . Trying To Declutter

Every week, and I do mean EVERY week, this is what my beautiful ottoman looks like by the time we get to the weekend . . .
2014-04-21 02.34.22

And every week. I try to make it look nice again! Of course, there are things I regularly keep on the ottoman, but we all have developed a bad habit of just dumping “stuff” on it, every day, then just all of a sudden, it looks like the photo above. Well, we are hoping to move and live closer to our church in just a few months, so we are TRYING to get decluttered once again, get the house clean, and begin packing up stuff that we don’t “have” to have available between now and then.

Here’s my ottoman “declutter” . . .
2014-04-21 03.19.28.

Of course, it is beginning to get cluttered again, so I guess tomorrow I’ll work on it again! 🙂

Weekly Wrap Up . . . Ending With Some Excitement!

Well, I had PLANNED to share a video with you this time, as the Sunshine Kids Choir at our church did their final special for the school year Sunday night, but in face, I can’t.

On Friday, after homeschool PE, my husband met up with us to get “Mr. Loquacious”, taking him to an appointment with an ear/nose/throat specialist. He’s had chronic, severe nosebleeds for some time, and had previously had chemical cauterization. What we THOUGHT was going to happen would be that the doctor would schedule him to have it done surgically, but instead, he did the chemical one again.

After that, we all met up again at church for Teen Comedy Night, a spaghetti supper/entertainment fundraiser for teen camp. I will share a couple of videos from the evening, but in a later post. They are taking forever to load to youtube!

Sunday morning, “Mr. Loquacious” had another big nosebleed, and since I’m in the choir, my husband had me take the others while he stayed home with our son, hoping he’d be better enough to go that night, which, he was.

Now here is why you aren’t seeing the video of the kids’ special . . . about half-way through, “Mr. Loquacious” quite literally passed out. Eyes rolled back, and he went backwards, hitting his head on the floor. I dropped my camera and took off to check on him, and by the time I got there, there were already some of the men helping him up. We ended up leaving shortly thereafter, just in case. My husband called a family member who happens to be an RN and a Paramedic, and he told us for sure what to watch for (concussion), not to give him food, not to give him the medication he takes to sleep. We stayed up so my husband could check him every couple of hours, in fact, my husband made me go to bed and he stayed up later to keep check.

“Mr. Loquacious” is just fine now, back to his normal self, but was very upset at having caused a disruption (even though told everyone understood), and leaving during the preaching (we’d JUST Friday had a lesson on manners and respect during church, lol!)

Here’s hoping this next week will be MUCH calmer! 🙂
